Ground Balance and AutoTrac? No Problem Here!!

The Ground Balance/AutoTrac post was really haunting me, and after I had trouble with the feature last weekend, I decided to give it the real test. Even though I prefer looking for older colonial and post colonial coins, I wanted to go to an area that I was reasonably sure would have old deep coins, so I hit an early 20th century swimming hole that once had a dance hall and picnic area. I swapped out the 950 coil, replacing it with the stock D2 because the dried up lake bed is very mineralized (as you can see by the coins) and the DD coil is a better choice than a concentric in these conditions. I never cared for the D2 before I got the V3i upgrade, but I figured if there is a problem with my 950 staying balanced it would narrow down the problem.

On the drive I was thinking that this would be a good choice of a spot to find my first SLQ, and wouldn't you know that the first coin I dug was one! As you can see the V3i performed like a champ digging 8 silver coins including the 1917 SLQ and 1905 Barber Dime. I also dug some Wheaties and a lot of old beach tags, but the find of the day was the gold crucifix with the initials J.E.S. and the date 4/5/55. The AutoTrac feature was flawless, and even after an hour the ground balance was perfect.

I only detected a 15x15 foot spot and the site is huge, so I will be returning again soon! I detected this exact spot with my DFX over a year ago and found one deep Barber Quarter. That setup missed all of these coins. The V3i with the D2 really hit hard on the deep silver, many were more than 8 inches deep!

GO PHILLIES!

Now that says allot.... What a days hunt!!!!

Now I thought there was another detector out there that performed better on silver....:hot: :clapping:

Very Nice Finds there Neil! It all comes down to Location, and knowing what you are doing. As we see you always do. Great job! H.H. Yazoo

All right Neal! Great finds and if by intuition, that SLQ, which by the way appears to be near uncirculated. Very nice finds and the crucifix.

I like that cross, i'd clean it up and wear it.

How was your auto tracking set? I've been setting mine at 15 or 20 and it seems to work ok. I also use locktrack about as much as auto. I have one site where it changes a good bit every 20' or so. I need to check the autotrack there.

It sounds like you have a nice fun site to hunt there... looks like it too! Is it a lake or old mine or what? Post a pic of the place if you don't think it'll give away where it is, i'd like to see it.

You know... (since you brought this up) I have both and I think one is as good as the other for casual use. They are the best two machines made. I have compared them side by side too many times on deep targets and I know that they both will stop you in your tracks on a deep target and they both will give a good and stable TID on deep targets...

I realize this is a comparison but IMO it is good and fair comparison...

I am also willing to say that if one is serious about detecting and willing to do the work and put in the time to learn... the V3 or V3i will beat any machine out there...

IMO...

I lowered the auto track down from 50 to 25. Site is an old lake bed. It "dried up" during the 70's. I think the spot I hit was under a diving platform at one time. It is now very muddy and I could not dig down more than 9 or 10 inches without the hole filling in with water.

I just got a new camera so maybe i will see about shooting some pics or videos on my next outing.

Cool... sounds like a great site... 'cept for the mud. Do you have second thoughts about the upgrade?
