Greetings from the UK

Greetings from Cardiff in South Wales. I am quite new to the whole metal detecting malarkee, but I am thoroughly enjoying myself. I have just purchased the Minelab X-Tera 30, which is due to arrive on Monday. At the moment I am using a cheap Chinese Import, but still getting suprising results. I found a nice gold ring yesterday at a local beach and a silver ear ring. How do you post pictures?

Mainly though I have been finding Roman coins and brooches (dolphin or crossbow pattern) from around 200AD - 500AD, as the area I live in had the 3rd biggest Roman army base in the UK! If any of you are interested in trading Roman items for rings you find please let me know. I find the coins about as often as you find the rings, and I am quite prepared to send coins first on a trust basis.

Anyway would be nice to hear from you chaps. Well done on all the finds - some of the treasure is exceptional! I only wish the beaches here were so wealthy, I thing Davey must be keep some for himself!

Kind Regards
Neil

Welcome Neil. It is a great hobby, or obsession, just depends on your outlook. One interesting point about your post...

"Anyway would be nice to hear from you chaps. Well done on all the finds - some of the treasure is exceptional! I only wish the beaches here were so wealthy, I think Davey must be keeping some for himself!"

...And what we Americans would'nt give to be able to dig up coins and relics from a thousand or two years ago... The grass is always greener on the other side of the pond. Good luck to you. Mike

Good Afternoon Mike

You are indeed right in that the grass is far greener here regarding antiquities, Roman, Viking, Norman and Saxon remains are all just a few inches under the soil. This time of year though most of the fields are in crop, so the farmers tend not to let you detect on them, plus the ground is pretty hard. Hence the beaches.

I have managed to secure a medium sized farm near my home for this year which has not been detected on before, so it should be interesting to say the least. I know the farm has been occupied since the 14th Century (my friend working there as a builder, unearthed a 16th Century well, 30 foot and stone lined, which is now a lit kitchen feature, covered in 3 inch thick glass). So I shall keep you all updated on the fiends once September comes.

Cheers mate

Hi Neil,

Greetings from the New York area. I have hunted a few times in the Bath area - my wife is British, from around the Bath area and I've really enjoyed detecting there. How far is Cardiff from Bath. Would be nice to meet you sometime when we travel back to see the in-laws and the lovely Bath surrounds.

Best Regards, Erik

Hey Erik

Bath is only a 30 minutes journey from Cardiff, and a lovely Roman town as I am sure you are aware.

By all means when you are next in the UK feel free to drop an email via this site and you can have a days detecting in South Wales.

Cheers
Neil

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I would very much enjoy doing some detecting with you next time we're in Bath (hopefully in September!)...I have never been to Wales and would enjoy seeing it for the first time very much and as well it would be great to meet you. I'll send you a PM so that we can exchange contact info.

Best Regards, Erik

looking forward to reading your future posts. I always like to see what others are finding too, from the other side of the world. Brings us that little bit closer. I think you'll enjoy using your X-Terra 30. Hears a lot of good reports, apparently great for parks and beaches.

Cheers for the welcome Angela. The X-Terra is due to arrive on Monday and I have a week off to see how good it is. I have also heared promising reviews, so heres hoping. I am still struggling with posting picture - any tips? There doesn't appear to be anyone else from Wales on this site, so it'll be good to let you alll know whats being found Gods own country.

Neil, click onto the Upload Photo square below. Then click browse, and from there you'll be able to get into the folder on your computer to download it. Just make sure you 've downsized the photo before Attaching Photo. I use the program Paint, to size down my photos, and I like to pop my photos in a folder of their own. (I usually downsize to 25%, it's a nice size, and quick to download). When you've downsized, give the photo a different name to your original Jpeg one, and when you go to retreive it, you'll know it's the one that's been reduced in size. Hope I've made sense here for you!
