Why do people insist on field cleaning, ESPECIALLY silver?? I made the mistake TWICE of field cleaning not ONE but TWO 1926S mercs in perfect condition in 1998 on different days. I sold both of them to Bob Campbell in SLC. He has a shop and if you google it and call him I am sure he will remember me. All About Coins. I sold him my 1893CC 10.00 gold piece BUT was able to buy it back.

Anyway, He gave me 100.00 EACH for those dimes and told me if I wouldn't have scratched them rubing the dirt off I would have got 150.00 EACH. He also told me to carry a small jar of olive oil and just put my silver in it. When I got home to run the coins under warm water. Worked perfectly.

IF you are going to save your coins for numistmatic value, PLEASE don't field clean. YOU will come out way ahead.

One other reason not to field clean is it eats your detecting time. I don't even try to see my gold rings underwater or silver. Everything goes in my mesh bag and I get surprized AFTER my air is all gone. LOL if I am with wading buddies and I come out and say I think I have gold, they swarm around like flies cause they know I have gold!! We all see it at the same time.

You all can do what you want. I sold an 1893O dime for 150.00 to him I didn't scratch, plus 6 barber halves and two beautiful standing libirty quarters 1920S and 1924S beautiful dates.

When I detect, I spend all my time detecting, my finds will not change and can wait till they get cleaned properly.

I hope this helps somebody. If you just want your coins for scrap value rub all you want. BUT just wait till you scratch a 1926S merc or worse yet a 1916D merc and I guarentee you will be sick of what you did to it.

Again my FREE 2

Here you go scube............ LOL

I have to see what I have found now!, I would guess that's the way most of us feel , that do it. They also most likely think, it's in the ground, already mostly beat up, circulated, hit by a lawn mower, or just zinc because you can see a chunk missing, cool to find but not worth that much, because its a penny or a dime or a quarter. Silver is only around 35-40 and oz anyway. Maybe they just don't care to much for coins? Or maybe they are looking for jewelry and coins are just a bonus?

I really need to start being more careful , I love the oil idea too. Great tip!

I understand what you are saying and would agree with you IF I did this for the money. I do this for fun and knowing what I found when I find it is most of the fun.

In 25 years of detecting, I have never sold a single silver coin I have found and do not intend to.

But, thats just me:bouncy:

As I said anybody can do what they want. BUT sooner or later some of the coins you save like my 1893CC eagle will be sold. My children or whoever will sell it after I die. Would be nice to have it worth more not being scratched.

And a lot of people do NOT intend to sell their finds but LIFE forces them to. Would also be nice to get the most then also. Why take the chance on destroying a great piece of American history?

OK I am done. I was just trying to help and I am sure I have helped some. I always know what I find after I get home, take a shower from diving and then looking at all my goodies.

Good luck and have fun out there!!!!!
