Short hunt got a 144-145 ID, I knew it was going to be a nickle, but was surprised 7.6 gram Gold 14k wedding band. Thanks Ron

Nice find Ron a few weeks ago i had the same reading 145 it was a white gold 14k band in dry white sand , good hunt  Jim

Jim have a nice photo somewhere my computer was scrubbed because of a virus and the photos go to a different location when re-sized.Always great to find gold. Thanks Ron

That's not fair. Send me the ring and I'll send you a pretty, shiny nickle!!

Ron, great find! And you are having much better luck than me. Saturday I hit a beach. Sunday I hunted hard for 7 hours at the same beach. Tons of crusty old coins, about probably 30 or 40 shot gun shells and the usual junk, but no rings. :rage: Only "keeper" besides the coins was a GM car key and alarm fob, which is in good shape so I'm going to drop it off at a GM dealer and see if they can find the owner by the key's passcode chip or something.

The coins were probably too deep in that bad mineralization for other machines but PP mode was banging on them with no problem. Even stuff 4 or 5" deep was either choking badly in disc like it was iron, nulling completely, or wasn't even making any kind of threshold response at all. Had one dime at 9" that "zinged" hard in PP and disc didn't even change the threshold to a null on when I flipped over to disc, like it wasn't even there, due to the minerals/black sand. I stuck my Pro Pointer in the hole to measure it, and I had coins not even half that deep do the same thing on me with not even a waiver in the threshold.

Gary, gold is a little extra work, but is worth the effort. My priorities my change next season to digging lower numbers. Thanks Ron

Man, that beats the heck out of a nickel any day.
That's one time I bet you weren't disappointed not to find a nickel in the hole!!
Nice!!!!

Hey Ron, remember the rules- If it's a penny, or if it's less than a 14K ring, you throw it back to grow bigger just like a fish. By the looks of that one though it's for sure well into legal size to keep.

I never pass up those 142 to 146 smooth sounding signals even if I'm only silver coin hunting, if they aren't changing by more than 2 digits no matter which way I sweep over them. The audio and combined stability of the VDI almost makes a nickel a sure bet on the Sovereign, and for me tabs start at about 149 and go up to 169 from there, so I don't end up digging to many of those when nickel hunting.

Lately though I've been digging the 136 to 141 range as well and coming up with some pretty crusty old nickels that are dipping down that low in VDI, but they still give a nice "round", smooth, quality "bong" sound to them, so I'm willing to take a chance for a V or shield or something or maybe hit the jackpot like you did with a gold ring.

Seems like every signal I've ever dug in the nickel range that changes by 3 digits or more depending on which way I sweep over it turns out to be odd shaped trash.

I'm suspecting an old crusty shield might read as low as 136, based on some Buffalo's, Vs, or even Jefferson's that have dipped a bit below 140 on me due to having sat so long in the ground.

Kevin,Killing Lincoln was a great book.Have to think about the Virginia relic hunt. Thanks Ron
