That looks to be a big park, pulled a lot of coins out. Good job. The only thing is with digging with the shovels out in the parks , it's only a matter of time they be banneding detecting there. JMO , GS

I'll 2nd that!

I've been detecting for over 25 years and where I'm from people don't complain about using shovels. The plugs looked great when we where done. We live in a steelmill town not to many crying yuppies around my part. I will note your concern and thanks for your comments but that park has been hit thousands of time not 1 complaint. The grounds crew were also there and said thanks for picking up the trash.

IMO, a public video showing shovels used in a park gives newbies the how-to-do-it green light.
A newbie with a detector and a shovel in a park can be a dangerous thing not to mention on-looker complaints in most areas.
Not all parks are as forgiving of shovel use.

In general, whats lacking in most of these UTube detecting videos (and detecting TV shows) is the followup after retrieving the target, namely how to properly replace the plug good as new. Need not be every single dig but at least one or two. A lot of newbies watch these videos for guidance.
Its not only newbies but also some detecting veterans that could use a refresher course on digging and replacing plugs. Seen way too many dug up plug eyesores out there.
This is how detecting bans get started, ask the guys who 'used to hunt' the Cook Co. IL. Forest Preserves.
OK, off my soap box!

Other than all that, enjoyed the video.

I agree on some points but not all the cook county deal was was stopped for many reason but the main one was trash from people just hanging out they just decided to blame the detectorist and 1 person digging up a golf course. My question to you is what shovel you think I should use no matter what there is still gonna be people watching, still gonna be people see me dig a hole in the ground, what would be your sugestion. My approach is if I see someone looking at me I try to talk to them and explain what I'm doing no matter what's going on and no matter how many people I have to explain to. Most of my digs I do more talking then detecting that's how you change people opinions not caring a different shovel no matter what you still have to dig. In all my years I've never been kicked out or had a complaint by doing this in my opinion is the way to approach detecting in public. If you look at a few videos before I show the trash I keep and take away. I will try in the future to explain more in my videos about digging a good plug and taking your trash cause on that note your right. But I constantly here people complaining about onlookers and hardly ever here about people taking there time to explain to them what's going on. It's not a hassle for me to do that it our responsibility to do that not just to hide the fact we have to dig. Thanks for your comments and again thanks for taking your time to prove some of your points. I could do better I just don't agree it will be it will be by getting a different digging tool.

John, really didn't mean to knitpick... its just that some of us grit our teeth when we see someone using a shovel in a park especially a park with a well maintained lawn.
Just wanted to bring this shovel-in-park thing out in the open for discussion if nothing else.

There have been instances where i either had to fix bad plugs even large gaping half-filled shovel holes. If they were unfixable i left the area immediately so i didn't get blamed. Happened more times than i care to remember.

I'll agree that a shovel in the right hands can repair a plug properly just as well as a garden trowel or digging knife but its the visual of someone walking around in a park
with a shovel and digging in their precious park. Add to that some people just don't like detectorists in their area for whatever reason.

There have been enough threads on this website where people watch detectorists out windows or from a distance then complain or call the police. Some of these 'busy bodies' don't need or want explanations.

With more and more areas becoming off limits to metal detecting, i think we all have to be aware.... or we'll end up like the UK where all parks are off limits.

There are pros and cons to whatever tools we use. Example : A Lesche digger, in some peoples eyes, see that we are wearying around a knife in a public place. Do I agree with what they see, NO, however it's what they seem to perceive. Whether we use a shovel, Lesche digger, garden tools or what ever.......the secret is to cover the holes to the same appearance before we started digging. I personally use both the 18 inch, the 31 inch Sampson shovels along with the Lesche digger, depending on ground conditions. And to this date I've never had anyone question or complain , therefore I have no intentions of changing my practice.IMO
