Great find today! 1914-D Key Date Wheat Penny

I hit up one of my favorite well hunted parks for a short hunt this morning and got this beauty off a very iffy signal. It was in the hole with a nail of course. The first one of these I've found and I'm very happy with it. Thoughts on grade or value?

(Sorry for the harsh lighting in the picture. I might take another photo a bit later.)

Thanks for reading and HH!

That is a great find indeed, congratulations. A professional grader would probably just give you a grade of damaged and certify it to be authentic, if it is. I bet a collector who wanted to fill a hole may be willing to spend several hundred for it. Without the corrosion, it could have been a $900 coin or better, nice detail :clapping:

Great find, and yes it has good value! Now all depends if you want to sell it or keep it. If you feel you want to sell I would give it a quick peroxide bath to remove the corrossion. It would greatly increase the value.

About a yr ago a guy offered me a 14D his dad found inside an old house in the plumbing, it had been exposed to water for yrs and was green like the ones you dig. I gave him 20 bucks for it taking the chance it would sell on ebay. I gave it a 2 minute peroxide bath and it made it a nice even chocolate brown color, all the green was gone. I placed it on ebay and it brought $120 bucks if I remember correctly.

Wow! That's a good profit on a $20 investment! I'm pondering giving it a peroxide bath to see if it helps with a little of the corrosion. There actually isn't much as compared to most wheats I dig because the soil in this park is fairly kind to them. I don't think I want to sell it though as I don't have one in my personal collection and I'm not really hard up for money. So into the coin book it goes! I'm just so happy to have found one. I hope the next key date will be a 1909 S VDB.

Congratulations on the Key Date, Filo! Thanks for the pictures.

Thanks everyone! Just wanted to post one last photo after a light hydrogen peroxide cleaning. Looks pretty good!
