Great Find at the Mine in Nevada

Well, I did find a lid to a can...LOL. My daughter and I went out in the middle of nowhere east of Fallon and visited the mines. The biggest and oldest was the Illinois Gold Mine. I did find and old sample flask that they would use to melt gold in the ovens. It is form a pottery co. that closed in the 1920's. Old trick I used. Kick around the cans in the dump. I t was inside one. I found a nice old bottle like that once. No real time to MD but it was a fantastic trip. I dropped rocks in the vertical shafts and it was banging until you couldn't hear it any more. Next time I visit I hope to find some MD time.

That drought really hit Illinois hard. I didn't know there were gold mines in Illinois.
Find the privy and dig it out. No telling how much gold fell into it.:goodnight:

Sounds like a dandy trip bud. Been in that neck of the woods but done no tecting. To bad you didn't scrounge up a relic or two.

Yeah those are the treasure holes anywhere. There's a couple of guys here in Portland who go all around the older section of town and get permission to locate and dig the old outhouse pits in people's back yards. THey make out like a bandit. They were in our neighborhood a few years back and they recovered some nice stuff, especially old, valuable bottles and glassware.

You never know where treasure will turn up. I do have a question. Do you run your coil cable that way all the time? It looks like it would beep all the time not being tight. Good luck in the mines!

That's how I run it since I heard twisting it around the shaft causes falsing.

If it's loose it will cause falsing. You might be able to run a higher sens level if it was tight to the shaft? But if it's working for you then don't change a thing.

I did have to drop my sens on notch here in NV because of falsing from the minerals. I have been meaning to get some Velcro so it isn't flopping around.

I did find a relic. I was kicking around the cans at the dump when I spied something white inside one of them. It is a smelting crucible. It was probably used in the lab for heating samples. I once found an old bottle in a can the same way. It has the initials of the pottery maker on the bottom. They went out of business in the 1920's. Here is a pic of me holding it.
Nice find bud. Should be an oldie. Are things like that collectible?

Bill
For me it is priceless. If it was in good shape(it has a piece missing on the back)I'm sure someone who collects mining stuff would want it. I found a lot of amethyst glass and old bottle tops. This was more of a ride than a treasure hunt. Next time I am back I will find a day to go straight there early and detect. There are a bunch of rock walls at the bottom of the canyon that look to have potential. Plus old dumps all over. I did see a few small holes where someone had been scratching around lately.
