1 reale dated 1780 and 1 dated 1787 a button that looks like its dated 178? with "best gold colour on the back with an eagle and shield standing on the world also what i think may be a copper arrowhead the barbed side appears to have been sharpened any help would be appreciated thanks kent

I have a book on buttons, if the button is old its in this book. Problem is,,, finding it. A clear picture is important when looking and exactly what it says. For there are many, many buttons that look similar.
I seen what u said about it ,and from what I see, I dont believe a clear pic is gonna happen. My camera does not show what the eye can see when things are in bad shape.I will thumb through this book tomorrow and see if I can find something on it.

No matter them are some great finds, my oldest coin is a 1804 half penny.

Great hunting !!
Good luck on many more !

Plymoythian12 looks like the colonial buttons i have and dated to the 1700's.these were brought and shipped from England with the first settlers here in America. The colonial buttons will be flat with usually writing on the back such as best colour,Treble Gilt,Orange colour,Treble-meaning a term such a high like a music note.Gilt-meaning to gild the metal .Some will say stand colour.Warranted etc...These buttons became popular in the beginning here in America because the first settlers found out real quick that the American Indians would take them for trade because the Indians would take any thing that resembled a coin and was shiny to give to the chief to boost his power. How do i know?many hours of research trying to find out what i was finding.Coins are rare to find from this period because the colonial people had few.great finds!:please:

I have been looking to help with this button, also.Really hard to tell wtout a clear pic.Its hard enough wt one.lol

Brokensignal could be right. I really dont know. But the closes I can get from your discription is a british navy button, they date back to 1748 and up. Says same thing about "colour" on back but not exact as yours. Thumbing through book there are several types that say these same things on back ,but none I see that have a eagle wt a shield. Other than british navy. On these Eagles are standing on a mound not a globe.

Although there are some others wt eagles standing on globe in a total different catagory, and they do not have shields or this type of writing on the back.

Another thing that is confusing,, is your button has a date on it.Although there are some buttons that have a date. From what I see there are not many. Is it possible that what you see is not a date but maybe broken letters from a word? Like "EXCESIOR"? Some of these buttons also have other things wrote on them(that could look like a date) and match, somewhat, your disription. They are post revolutionary buttons wt eagle on globe. I am guessing .

Also several categories of buttons say that there are some out there unknown from the 1700's. So who can really knows when the description is so vague.
There are 1000's of buttons so it is really hard to tell ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but I tried. Good Luck

here are some pics out of book of british military buttons and desriptions of them. ( a very small part of what they say and show.

CRESTDOLD COLOUR -See Variety of buttons i posted a couple of days back on this forum under Some Carolina History,Yes these buttons were used on French Militia (Military) if you can see the button to the left with the 21 on the front.See some other buttons up top(some have the word COLOUR on them) some were military some were on plain garments that the early people wore here from Europe,France,England,Britain-(I do not know were they were made over seas?) have never seen any of these buttons on net or books, just trying to get close.Maybe you can help me when you are sure?I can say this the Treble Gilt Buttons trace to what i said and the Treble Gilt buttons trace to the buttons with the word Colour.

I do not see a date on the front of the button there,it does look different than the ones i have found with the bird and shield, the center ring is different.I know the maker must have used the term Colour to rate the button as to type of button.I am at a loss now! there must be so many. the Civil War buttons are studied more, but i do not know why?these buttons are older with even more history but there are more Civil War buffs out there?????????????????
