Gray Ghost Ultimate's blowing my ears off

The strain relief on the UC-30's that came with the Etrac started separate from the cord, so to ensure I didn't go without I bought a pair of Gray Ghost Ultimate headphones on Amazon. I like the detented volume knob positions but holy crap are they loud. I can still hear the beeping. Hitting a modern aluminum screw-type bottle cap really popped the volume. The only way I got clear tones was at the loudest setting. One detent lower and they sounded really muffled. Anything lower than that and they were barely whispering at best.

Any setting changes on the Etrac for these headphones?

I use Ultimates without issues. The volume knob is a somewhat coarse setting but you should have a limiter switch on them that mutes the sound a little without losing signals. Volume limit and threshold level work independently but you should be able to find a happy medium in there somewhere. I think of volume gain as more of an audible depth signal but adjusting that may help as well.

Thanks for the response sprchng. I didn't notice any difference with the limiter switch. I'd really like to turn the Etracs volume up so I can use more of the headphone volume range, but it I'm pretty sure I've got the etrac at max.

Ok, I dropped the volume and the volume gain on the etrac. Both were at 29. As suspected it lowered all the volume settings. I've got them at 23 now. While the highest headphone volume knob setting no longer blows my ears off its disappointing that the volume knob is useless. One click lower and everything sounds really muffled. The limiter switch does nothing as far as I can tell on my machine.

Any reason to suspect I have defective headphones?

What are the volume limit and volume gain settings on your etrac?

I think the limiter switch is just that--only effective when sound levels exceed a certain potentially harmful level . Everyone's hearing level is different so my setting is irrelevant and I don't know right off plus I'm too lazy to go look. In addition , I have not been using the GGs lately but have been using a set of wired backphones from XP instead. If you suspect there is a defect in the GGs I would not hesitate to call them---you have nothing to lose.

Just lower the volume only in the Etrac. Keep the VOLUME GAIN up there as that makes deep objects sound louder after a certain depth so you won't miss a deeeeep coin. DEEP ON just adds a filter that supposedly helps with the ID of a target smooth out but slightly slows down the processing. FAST ON clips a signal slightly shorter and removes a filter making the processing faster and is good to run in very trashy areas. I use the gold pro's from the guy who makes the stealth X 5"-8"-12" coils and they have individual volume controls on each muff and works well 3-4 clicks from full is about right for me with Etrac Volume set at 30 and just use the headphone's to adjust it. Also Killer Bee's are the same but they have a limiter switch and another switch for using different detectors circuitry.

I use the Gray Ghost and my settings are 27 gain and limits at 30 . The GG volume control is useless but the headphones them selves are the best for the ET.

Only one setting works with the ET or Terra , the other works with some other machines
