Gray Ghost NDT headphones sound tinny...

Hi,
This is my first post,I'm new to metal detecting just bought a Omega 8000 with three coil set.
I also bought a pair of Garrett easy stow headphones to get me started,I found after a couple of hours they were hard on my ears...just to tight.
So I ordered a pair of gray ghost NDT's... have read they are a good set of headphones.
Well they arrived today...nice fit, feel very comfortable well made but I find they sound tinny and very low sound even with volume turned wide open..... compared to the garrett easy stow's?
Has anyone owned both...or have any experience with either?
I really like the sound of the garrett easy stow's... nice and loud with good low tones and lots of volume ....I'm not sure if I have a problem with the gray ghost NDT's or not....hate to order something else without trying them on...I have no shops close so I have to order on line.
Need to find a pair I can hear with....very disappointed in the gray ghost so far....can any one way in with some advice.

Thanks,great site!

Nova Scotia, Canada

Be aware that grey ghost, jolly rogers, and a few others are made by detector pro.I have had some volume issues with these as well.Killer bees and pro golds are made by sunray.Say which detector you have and someone my jump in and give you some ideas.Keep working at it.

Thanks Spirit for the reply...so I guess it's just not me then...good to know :)
Oh by the way I'm using a Teknetics Omega 8000 with 3 coils 5"DD 11"DD and 10" that came with it.
What make of headphones did you find worked best for you....

Hi All, What is the best Ohms to use on detectors? I was told to use high Ohms for higher sound, I have very bad hearing i wear aids in both ears and still have trouble. I have a set that run 170 Ohms and i can hear them ok but need to run detector at full blast. Would 30 Ohms do better? Thanks for any help. Flintstone

I would ask on the tek forum. You should know what your jack is also. Some brands us mono jack outputs and some us a stereo jack. This is just good to know.Don't feel bad, with a Tesoro there is no volume knob on the detector. So i know all about dealing with headphones. You may want to try earbuds in the summer. This is were you have to use adapters etc..Maybe a 1/8"extension cord.Good luck to you.

When I was in the Navy we were taught that one should try to match the impedance of the earphones with the impedance that the equipment was looking for. When i bought my Sovereign GT I did a lot of searching for earphones that would match the 32 ohms of impedance and did not find any. Even the ones with the Minelab logo did not match. So I sent an E-Mail to Minelab and asked what one should do. Their reply was that the higher impedance "Might" degrade the sound a little but not enough to make any real difference. I purchased a set of Killer B II headphones since they had volume controls on each can. I also wear hearing aids and have completely lost all of my high frequency hearing and some of the rest of the spectrum of sounds. With the Killer B's I am able to hear enough of the various tones that my machine puts out. The separate volume controls allows me to adjust for the hearing differences in my ears.

Give SlickPickRick a call, Sweet Dreams Detectors, in the Kentville exchange. He's got various headphones in stock, and probably an Omega to. Should be fairly easy to try something out for troubleshooting, he's a very nice fella, very helpfull. He's on Landofthebluenose forum. What part of NS are you at? I'm in the Valley, got the same set-up as you but I'm just using Calrads. Wecome to the obsession!!!! cheers.

Hi Clamdigger

I'm from the Yarmouth area,as you know I'm a newbe at this....bought a Omega from Rick about 3 weeks ago also got the extra coils 5"DD and 11"DD.Really like this machine and just starting to learn it a bit...weather has been so bad I just played with it in my back yard.I'm going to get a Tek G2 as well...would like to do a little gold prospecting this summer.
Also bought a pair of Garrett easy stow headphone to get me going....I like the sound and volume they give....just a killer on the head, not comfortable at all.
So I decided to order a pair of good headphones..got Rick to bring me in a pair of Gray Ghost NDT's love the way they fit.... comfortable! but I find the volume is a lot lower the Garrett's and don't have that full sound to them...sound a bit tinny??
Emailed Rick but I don't think he's tried a pair of GG yet so don't think he can compare one from the other.Just wish the GG's had more volume because they do fit well...sadly I'm going to have to find something else...
Don't know how the Private message works on this forum.....got to figure that out lol.
Thanks for responding and HH :)

Hey, welcome to the hobby. My hunting buddy use's the G2, and he really spanks me when we're out. We where down Pubnico this summer, lots of potential for old finds thereabouts, 1600's first settled. We just found clad and costume jewelry that time out, lots of rain. We'll have to get Rick and all get together for a hunt sometime. Maybe Minelab will do another beach hunt thing this summer, the last one was great for meeting people, it was at Rainbow Haven. Rick should have upcoming details.
Good luck with the phones compatability thing, like I said earlier I just use Calrads, $20, and they seem to work ok with the Omega and all my other toys. Cheers and HH, you'll probably get hunting weather before me.

Thanks Bob

Yes if you get down this way again give me a shout....would love to hook up with you guys.
Just wish someone could compare both headphones to see if it's me....
My look into a pair of Calrads....I'm thinking of building a pair of headphones...

Cheer's HH

A bit difficult to comment as I haven't heard the tone(s) of the machine you're using. However, when I first started using Grey Ghost phones, I though they sounded slightly shrill and tinny compared to what I'd been using. After getting used to them, then switching back to my earlier phones, the earlier ones seemed fuzzy and the sound was like it was in a barrell. Ultimately the Ghosts are crisper and cleaner than the others and now I much prefer them. I do feel anyone that detects without using some model of headphone is handicapping themselves considerably.

I know i complaned bout my killer bees, but i got some gray gost NDT and the broke down on the 1st run and it was alot of down time , I had them send me the regular ones and used them but when i sodered the cord back on to my old killer bees the diffrence in sound was astounding killer bees where so much better sounding than the gray gost , yes the gost sound tiny I can now see the killer bee phones are the better chioce, but i am stuck with the gray gost , every one claims things to sell them but untill you have been burned by the difrent phones and finnaly find the ones that are good you have spent hundreds of dallors. do badd its that way . take it from me killer bees sound better way better. but in time the cord will go on you so get your sodering Iron and cord you will need it .

Hi Barber,
Glad to hear you found them a bit shrill and tinny.....because I did the same thing..wore the gg's for a few days and then switched back to the cheap Garrett's and now they sound fuzzy...guess it's what you get use to..
I'm still going to look for another set of headphones...they say Killer B's have a bit more bass and volume...

Thanks Bob.

Hi Gunnar,

Think I'll have to order a set of killer b's and give them a try...keep the GG's for a backup.

Thanks,
Bob
