loaded up the car Friday morning with 2 AT Pro's and a SeaHunter Mark2 and headed for the lake to give my new GreyGhost Amphibians and waterproofed Propointer a good try-out. The conditions at the lake were great!! No wind, thus no waves, and a nice hot Texas sun beaming down, what more could you ask for!! I hooked up the Amphibs to my newer ATP still sporting the S-shaft, 5 x 8 coil. This was the first time this ATP has hit the water and the first time I did a side-by-side with the 2 ATP's I usually have the stock 8 1/2 x 11 coil and Killer B phones on this rig, but to keep everything even-steven with my older ATP, I robbed the 5 x 8 from my AT Gold . What I found out that all ATP's are not created equal!! I had never really noticed this before as I usually just use one or the other to hunt with, one with small coil, one with stock coil, depending on where I am.
Here's the newer ATP with the stock S Shaft, Ampib 'phones and Propointer.

I hunted with this rig for about 1 1/2 hrs. and found a few coins and the usual pulltabs. The Amphibs worked great!! I did a side by side with the Amphibs and my old Grey Ghost Underwaters and my initial thought was that the old GG's were louder, but it wasn't that at all. When I switched them around between the 2 ATP's the Amhpibs were suddenly louder. What?? The difference is in the 2 ATP's. The older rig that I always use in the water was louder with both sets of Grey Ghosts, go figure.
Here's my old ATP with the Amphibs attached. This one was one of the very first ATP's sold. It's had a rough life, been to the Garrett hospital a couple of times, but still humming right along.

I hunted with this rig for about 1 1/2 hrs. also and had about the same results. The Amphibs on both rigs worked great. The sound was nice and crisp and much easier on the ears than my old GG's. The cups are nicely padded and overall the 'phones are very comfortable. One thing that struck me was that I could hear my tones so much better but I could also hear stuff that was going on around me. I could plainly hear 2 guys in a boat out on the water, a good distance away. I could hear the conversations of folks on the beach.
Next, I hooked the Amphibs to the SeaHunter and am happy to report that they work on it too!! Bonus!! I 've had the SH for a few years but have only used it a couple of times because I could never hear it very well thru the stock 'phones. The Ampibs were great with it set to Standard Trash Elim, nice and crisp tone, but not so much in Discrete Trash Elim. I think it might be something going on with the SH itself. I bought it used and I think a trip to the Garrett Hospital might be in order. I only hunted in shallow water so I could easily retrieve my targets using the waterproofed ProPointer. I found that I was about a foot off on my pinpoint with the SH, high and to the right everytime. Here's the SH with Ampibs attached!!

And this guy stopped by and watched me for a few minutes as I was switching out my 'phones.

I forgot to load my AT Gold, but intend to hook the Amphibs to it Monday and give it a try on a soccer field and try and snag a goldie.
My waterproofing on the Propointer has been a long procedure of trying different things. I had seen where some guys used marine grade silicone so I gave that a try. I globbed it on and tried it and drowned my PP cuz some water always found it's way in. So then I tried some of that stuff you see avertised on TV to seal gutters with. The guy sprays it on a screen door for the bottom of his boat and then paddles off. Well, it won't seal in a Propointer and it's tough to get off. By now I have drowned and dried out the PP about 10 times, so I am thinking there is just no good way to seal up the Propointer. Then I get an idea to try some Plasti-Grip, the stuff you use to coat your tools with for a nice rubber grip. So, I go to the Homey (Home Depot) and snag a can. If you decide to do this, be sure to pour about 1/4th of it into something before you dip the PP or it will run over the top (quite messy). First you want to unscew the top on the PP out a little and wrap some twine in and then tighten it up so you can hang the PP to dry. The can is only deep enough to allow you to go a little more that half way in, so you will have to dip it, hang for 1/2 hour to dry enough to reverse it and dip the other half and then rehang. 4 hr's dry time then and you're good to go. I peeled the part off the battery cap as you don't need that anyway. The battery compartment was already waterproof so it's of no concern. You can still hear the speaker (I wish I couldn't, vibrate is all I need) and the power button works great. No light now, but I never needed that anyway. Now I can scan the bottom whan I've found a target in the shallows and pick it up with my hand instead of lotsa scooping to get a danged floating pulltab up. I also use it in my sifter to locate my target in the mud, rocks and gravel that is in most of the spots I water hunt. I put a donut sized piece of a Noodle on it too, just enough to float it in case I drop it. I keep it plugged into a Noodle end on my sifter for easy access.
OK, here's the total take for the 5 hr's in the water using the 3 rigs. I found the junk ring with the SH, amazingly enough. Also found all of the bottlecaps, bobby pins and screws too!!

So here's what I came away with from all of this. Waterproofed Propointer is nothing short of wonderful. I have been using a Vibraprobe, but it has a very limited range, an inch at most. The Grey Ghost Amphibs are simply the best 'phones I have ever used. Nice clear tones and I can use them on 4 of my Garretts, both ATP's, the AT Gold and SeaHunter Mark 2 The Amphibs have a heavier guage crossover wire and it's attached to the crossover bar at a better spot to prevent strain. The earcups seem softer and are better shaped to fit over my ears and not crush them. The volume control knob is nice and big and easy to find wearing gloves (I always wear gloves, just too much rusty stuff out there waiting to poke you). At $150, they are priced right as I paid $140 for the GG underwaters and they only work on the ATPs/ATG. And I also now know that all ATP's are not created equal, some are louder that others and the tones even sound different.
So, now it's back to the drawing board and try to find a way to put my scoop on my sifter and not have it fall off while I'm retrieving a target in the shallows. Any ideas??
