Real windy and cold. Usually a big wind during the Friday night football games means good odds for paper dollars blown into the downwind fenceline. Nope, no good for cans of cold soda either, lots of styrofoam cups from all the hot chocolate and coffee though...the Cannies, (empty can hunters) were out early like usual but were discouraged with the harvest, we talked about the poor finds lately. Most of these guys are my age, ride bicycles, and hunt exclusively for the 10c empties. One guy I got to know, (Dale) carries a detector, has a little trailer that a kid would normally ride in hooked up to his non-descript and not worth stealing bike, he goes for the cans and then hunts clad under the bleachers. A miserable and tough way to try to come up with some money, yet these guys are at it all the time, and will share stories of great finds like we do here, except they are talking about a massive haul of cans they once found, or a wad of bills they eyeballed....
Anyway, I was out with the 70 running at 38 sens, which seems to be a real good setting for lots of shallow clad in the trash in a gosh darn hurry...This weekend, I got over 20 bucks in clad, three dollars in cans..hit the Coinstar, lots of nickels, (24) only 97 pennies, and the rest D's and Q's...(lots of Q's) Found a pair of earrings with the backs still attached in an end zone, 3"deep, good gold signal, pretty little things, but plated...
I think my ears got tuned into nickel signals from water hunting all summer.
Found these wild grapes and ate a bunch, started thinking about the cold wind, the Cannies, and what a tough place this World can be, thankful to be on this side of the sod and hunting clad and gold instead of relying on cans, thankful for the grapes, though small and sour, wet my whistle anyway...I know one thing, If a guy was ever homeless, poor and broke, and in need of a way to make some halfway honest money, a detector should be at the top of their list as a survival tool. Its easier hauling 20 bucks clad than 200 cans on a bicycle.
