Grand National Relic Shootout Featured Next Week . . :detecting:

I have this series scheduled to Tivo, they do some interesting Treasure Hunts. I believe there's one on gold prospecting coming up too.

HH,
Brian

OK, I'm ready to go to North Carolina !!

Hope some of you guys caught this program, they founds some fantastic oldies including a George Washington Inaugural button :detecting:

Hi, Saw that program. I was so excited to see that type of colonial detecting going on. It's what I do. Is it just me or did they high ball the value of all of the items. I think a King George was how much? And they called it rare? And is a 1800's Half Cent is now referred to as a flowing hair? What happened to draped bust? A crushed thimble for $5.00, a rotted wedge for $10.00? Tell me where I can get those prices, and I'll sell you all the rotten iron and King George's you can take, at that price!!!! It's typical of what's happening in society today. Over state and over value everything in hopes of selling more metal detectors I presume. I think it makes us look bad and very unprofessional. I came away very disappointed with the way our hobby truly is portrayed . What do you think??

I suspect they hyped it a bit for the TV program (OK, maybe a lot, unless that thimble was sterling, which it wasn't and I don't see anyone paying $5 for a smashed one). I've been collecting stuff all my life, and sometimes I chuckle at various price guides when they come out with ridiculous prices...if you could sell it to the book, you'd be rich

It would be a blast to be able to join one of these types of hunts.

It's probably aluminum jelly. I've had a couple people tell me it works, but I haven't tried it yet. I think they get it at an auto parts store. Wal mart maybe also.

Aluminum jelly. Can be found at Ace Hdwe for about $5. Use on items that are gilted and will make them shine like the button. Just brush on, leave 5 minutes, and rinse off. repeat as needed. I bought some 2 weeks ago and it really works.

Aluminum jelly it is, but I've heard you should only use it on gold/silver gilted items, anything else it'll pit...never tried it, but it would be wise to test it on junk before goodies.

I used it on an old brass handle and it shined it up nicely. One thing I might add, after rinsing with water, use some baking soda to neuralize the jelly.
