Grade My Seated Dime

New member
Since it's been kind of slow in here lately, I thought I would give you guys something to do. Here's a seated dime I found a few years ago at a road construction site. I haven't cleaned it except for a good rinsing. I found it sitting on the top of a wind row made as the blade went down the street. I'd like to hear from you guys as to the condition and the value.

Hi Glenn....the "salt" coins don't fair too good. I found this one on Main St. in Bountiful years back when they laid new asphalt. So what's you're opinion on the coin?

Stoofer, firstly I must say that is the nicest Seated dime I've ever seen that was dug. I don't suppose you'd like to take me to your hunting grounds? :0) I would say the dime grades around EF (extra fine) condition (might grade AU except there are some scratches on the edge of the coin). The "Liberty" is extremely sharp on this one.

A check on the PCGS website (close to real prices, forget red book, those are inflated retail prices, this site has dealer buy prices) says this dime is $72 in EF condition, and jumps to $164 in AU condition, while F condition it would be $27. As you can see, there is a big diff in price from the EF to the AU, so you might want to get this one checked by a professional coin dealer just in case.

Thanks for the input Mark. I wish I could take you where I found it. Unfortunately, it's under asphalt now. It ranks as one the best spots I've ever hunted.

Mike,

I claim no expertise in grading coins so I will leave that up to the experts. I found an 1878 seated quarter that looks about in the same condition. Then I have an 1877 seated dime that is warn so badly that there is almost no lettering left on either side.

Let me know when you would like to hunts some parks

HH,
Glenn
