gpx to ctx

I have a problem some would like to have. A while back I bought a gpx 5000. Since then, I have found myself searching more ghost towns than gold fields. This is due to a move to a different town. The gpx is not the detector for the the trashy areas I find myself in. At least I don't think so. Would a trade for a 3030 be a good idea or should I learn the 5000 better?

Get both, because the Gpx will go super deep and used after you clean out a spot with the FBS unit .If I were you I consider the E-Trac as it is right with the CTX, both are silver sniffers and the E-Trac is half the cost as the Ctx with many more available coil options. Both are a Killer combo !!!!

I think you need a VLF for the ghost towns, although a GPX could help after you clean them up.

CTX is a great machine, but you might want to look into a Deus, T2, or one of the Noktas for iron infested ghost towns.

Using a GPX in old trashy ghost towns is not the ideal machine, albeit using a smaller DD coil than stock may help but it could be seen as sung a sledge hammer to crack a nut,the CTX with the stock coil and or the additional 6'' coil would be the best option and of course it does have the larger coil option as well,so that would cover most of your needs.

If you do the odd gold nugget hunting then buying a additional specialized machine would still be possible i would have thought from the money left over from selling the GPX,the GPX is a deadly machine but is a site specific detector and not a general all rounder VLF machine.

Although i dont hunt old ghost towns as i am based in the UK but i do own a Pulse machine and detect on very old trashy roman sites and the Pulse is not the ideal machine, the GPX although it has a form of discrimination but of course only when using a DD coil is what i would decribe as being a very basic form of iron rejection.

My advice would be to hold on to the GPX5000. Get to know it better and also obtain the small 10x5DD coil. I use the GPX5000 regularly and on heavy iron contaminated sites, I am not saying they are the best in those conditions but you can work with it. The main difference between the GPX and a VLF when it comes to discrimination is this. Operating with a VLF you will normally knock out all small iron but be caught out with the large iron. With the GPX it is the other way round, you will dig very little large iron but will be caught out by small flat iron roughly 1"x1" and wheel nut size bits of iron at depths in excess of 6". Discrimination varies on the GPX depending on the Soil Timing selected. The larger the DD coil the deeper it will discriminate but of course the down side is the coil covers more ground which will work against you in a heavily contaminated area. By all means get another VLF with fast recovery to work between the iron. However, you have to ask yourself this - if there is a possibility of good targets at depth and iron is nearer the surface, will you get the good targets if the iron stays in place?

I have both a PI unit and a FBS machine ...... why is that ....... well .... because they do not make a single detector that can do both jobs !!!! Smassey, you have the very best GOLD nugget machine out there with the GPX- 5000 ... therefore, keep it ! Get a FBS E-Trac or what ever other choice you would like for sniffen in trash ground for coins or relics. You have already spent the big bucks on the GPX ... so a second FBS machine such as lightly used E-Trac for $ 900 bucks or so is a killer combo having the two . Merry Christmas and treat yourself !!!

I primarily hunt for gold, and have a Minelab GPX 5000. After running P.I. detectors since 2000, you can tell iron, it tends to scream/echo, as you move your coil away from your target. While gold, and lead tend to be soft, and will not follow your coil as you pull up from your target. But, with P.I.'s it's best to dig all target's, also I've had great interest with coin/relic detecting, bought a Fisher F-75 SE, In Feb/2013. The F-75, has paid for its self and sum, just in gold finds, 1/25/2015 found a 57.3 dwt. nugget, with the F-75.

Take care, Ed
