Doc was a very busy man the last time I was down in Vegas--he was trying to wear about a dozen different hats as he was getting everything arranged for his new house project--Jackhammer knows what's going on. I'll be down in Vegas the second week in April. If Jackhamemr's description of Doc's new house is any indicator, I should be able to see it from the air long before I find it on the ground.
I've been running around the Net finding out all I can on the 4500. As usual, a lot of 4000 owners are ticked off that Minelab's come out with a new machine. But, the thing about Minelab is that they are trying to stay current with the technology, and they want to get the best use out of that technology that they can for the gold hunter. Sure, it stinks that you (if you're a 4000 owner) put out big bucks for technology, only to have it quickly obsolete, but have you bought a computer in the last six years? It's obsolete before you get it out the door.
However, I do understand the frustration of the consumer. At least you can upgrade a computer, to a certain extent. So why not be able to upgrade your minelabs? That's a good question, and I'm sure that question is what frustrates many Minelab customers. However, the unanswerable answer may be similar to how you can't upgrade to some of the newest computer technology--no matter how badly you want to. The processors and other parts just won't allow it.
Having said all I've said, I truly sympathize with those 3500 and 4000 owners that are now feeling left behind, duped, or somehow hoodwinked. But, I don't think it's that simple. The processor technology is exploding so rapidly that there are just better ways to sniff out the gold this year than there were last year; and, brace yourselves for it, next year it will probably be the same, as computer technology is growing exponentially--so fast, it's unbelievable.
People with the money will buy the new Minelab 4500. Some won't buy it out of principle. Others won't ever be able to buy it new because of its price, but they'll snap up used 3000's, 3500's, and 4000's. Believe it or not, I'm still finding nuggets with my ancient 2100, but I've also found gold with the 3000, the 3500, and the 4000. They are all superb detectors with a keen nose for the gold.
All the best,
Lanny
