GPS and Topo maps

Mark / MO

New member
I just orderd my GPS and was wondering if anyone else was using GPS to relic hunted? I have seen National Geographics TOPO maps collection and was wondering if there is a better series out there to use for relic hunting?

Thanks, Mark

Purchased one about a year ago and use it alot both with Topo maps and without. I am fortunate to live in an area with hundreds of miles of forest where people have camped and deer hunted for years. If I'm out wandering around and happen to come across and old deer camp, usually identified by a piece of wood nailed between two trees used to hang a kill, it's nice to be able to set a waypoint so I can find my way back to it with my detector at a later date. Also there are web pages where you can put in your county and do a search for old Schools, churches, whatever and it will give you long. and lat. Enter it in your GPS and your on your way. Nice way to find your way back to where ever you parked the truck too, but that is another story.. Bob

I live in Arkansas, and we have a state dept. where you can pick up very detailed topo maps from the Geoligical Survey dept. These maps cover a 26 sq. mi. quadrant and are very detailed. When you inquire, just name a township close to where you want to hunt. These maps are very cheap, and they will print one while you wait. Hope this helps.

Mark, get USAPhotoMaps at http://www.jdmcox.com/ . It's free, and with it you can download just about all the topo maps and aerial photos you can think of. :) You can download waypoints and routes from your GPS into it, and they will overlay on top of the topos and photos.

Mark,
I use both Mapsend and Maptech. The Mapsend software came with the GPS. I download the topos right into the unit from there. I dump my "Marks" & "Waypoints" into the Maptech from the GPS (and vice versa) just because I like fooling with it better.

Do you have a web address for the search site you mentioned, please? I have a nice GPS and recently got a MD, but haven't seen a search site like the one you mentioned.
Thanks in advance,
Tagamet

Most excellent on the reference. You'll need to take a number to get in line for the spyware guys. I spent two hours last night removing the worst of them (the spyware, not the guys), but one is still in there (argh)
Thanks again,
Tagamet

That's a GREAT site! It's especially nice that it lists spots that are "abandoned", and labels them as such.
Thanks yet again,
