GPS and the treasure hunter?

Hello to all again. I have been looking around at handheld GPS systems to use while i'm out on the field detecting or while traveling to the next possible spot on the list and have noticed that there are quite a variety of the handheld GPS units on the market. When a person is in doubt about different equipment for the hobby sometimes the opinions of other TH'rs help.
My questions would be 1. Does it seem pointless to purchase a handheld GPS unit to aid me in my hobby and quest for finds? And 2. What units would other TH'rs reccomend would work good? I would like to have a unit that i can hook into the computer to manipulate, add, or remove various maps and map options. Any help and input into this would be greatly appreciated and can be posted or emailed to me.
Thanks for the help and a happy holidays to all.

Don't know beans about one, but a local fellow using one put us right in the middle of a late 1800's park in the middle of the woods..Unfortunately later learned it actually had been hit by several complete clubs and with exception of some cheap token pieces drew a blank on that hunt...
