LEARN the detector you have. One of mine has been laughed at, found fault with, etc. But it's my top producer!
OVERLAP your sweeps--it makes up for a lot of shortcomings.
VARY your sweep speed till you find the best pace.
EXERCISE in God's great outdoors! Breathe, bend over, befriend others on the journey. Remember, just like people, there's no perfect detector.

Very well expressed and I couldn't agree with you any more! Along with selecting the best size and type of coil for the hunt you're good to go. I still think just getting your coil over the target and masking issues are the tallest hurdles we have to deal with probably more times than not.

Perfect Detector? Maybe the one that you have used until it is almost an extension of you would come close. If there is such a thing as being addicted to detecting then I just may be addicted.

Hi Slingshot, Those are words everyone should keep ingraved in their minds. How many times does someone get a detector and use it for one season, than thinks you need a top of the line detector. Later they realized the one they had was easier to use and you liked it better. Give yourself time to learn your detector. A person with a detector they used for many years will beat a guy with a new fancy one... KEN fron Ind.

Thanks, everyone. Kinda funny- I was reading all the posts on the forum and even I got to thinking-manybe I need another detector-I mean I only have 8-or is it 9?:crylol: Then I remembered watching a group with machines that made me drool! What I remember the most was watching them skip about a foot between sweeps and me going over the same area the next day and finding stuff they left behind.

Dancer, I'd have to disagree just a tad. I'd go site, hunter then machine, but it is close and not always consistent. If it isn't in the ground no one and nothing will find it. We have all walked over enough treasure to break a statue's heart. The best detector in the hands of a NOOB is very poor golf club. But then every now and then we read of a beginner's find that is a once in a lifetime treasure. Oh heck, I just like to MD and sometimes I overthink things. :detecting:

I remember in the '70's when it was BFO's & TR's before straight VLF's came out--sites were so rich it did not much matter what you used at first. Then as
they got hunted and things got deeper, a better detector was needed. You became more proficient as time went by, with the level of detector you used.
Once VLF's came out they opened up bad ground or very deep targets, but with a price--lack of discrimination, and a lot of trash was dug until
the VLF/TR hit, and then the wait till the dual circuit, followed by motion units.
But if its not there, a GPZ, ATX or TDi can't find it.

I see people thinking they are good at finding stuff or get a bit big for their boots and i have to smile on the inside of course , but the only detectorist that will impress me is the one who can find something that's not there, now that there would impress me :poke:
