I was dong the golf course in the town I lived in in 1977 before the one I am at now which was a old race track and also like a park as there were other activity were held there from the early 1900 or before. This place had a old school on the corner of the area that had been tore down since 1960 and now was the corner of a golf course.
I was told the area was a old race track before turning it into a golf course and you could see where the track area actually was, so I walked out to the big tree that was out there to try it out and only found a little trash and never gave it another thought until I see a couple of young kids with a cheapie detector, you know the one that maybe find a coin on top of the ground if lucky. I went and talk to them and they told me they found a dime with a lady on it and a penny with a Indian on it the day before in this area, didn't take me long to go home and get my detector and come back to this area. It was good, really good for some of us and made one big mistake as letting my Friend and local dealer at that time know what I had found and told him to meet me on Sunday and I would take him to the site and he could see what he could do. I also told him he was welcome, but don't tell anyone about it and should have known better as the next Tuesday I was told by a neighbor he brought out 8 or 9 people out to this golf course to detect. At the time there were not many people golfing so we could go most anytime and if they were golfing we would move to different areas to stay out of their way and not cause any problems, but as some others would come out it got ruined for a few years as there were hole everywhere from those that come out of Fargo and never covered them and those digging on the greens, so they didn't let anyone detect for some years, but a few of us worked with the ground keeper to only detect after it closes for the year, stay off the greens and leave no holes uncovered and take the trash with us, so now there is a hand full of people he wont kick off.
This are was a old horse racing track and also the army had some camping there back in around 1919 I was told and had what was play days once a year where all the smaller towns would come for different games and had one big picnic that lasted 2 or 3 days. There was a ballfeild in one corner too that was tore out in around 1958 to make more room for golfing.
I would love to find another one such as this as there was a lot of nice coins with most of them old and will always remember this place and was back about 3 years ago and found a little yet.
Some of the high lites for my wife and myself as we took our 3 year old son with us and he would wonder off so the wife would go where he went and she always found something great. One such was she found on the very edge of the track a coin purse the leather was eaten away bad, but held 2 IH pennies and seated dime and a 2 cent piece. Being I worked all day we went out the one evening for 2 hours as the bug drove us away, but between the 2 of us got over 60 some coins with nothing newer than 1940. I had got 2 of my 3 silver dollars out of that place and I remember I had got 12 barber half's myself in the years I had detected it with more coming out of it that others had got also and only remember 4 or 5 walking lib half's and cant remember all the barber dime and merc dimes and very few Rosie's, many quarters that were mostly barber and standing lib with dates on them. Got a 1958 class ring I was able to return the the owner. At the time my detector was the Compass relic Magnum 7 auto while my wife had a Compass Relic Mag 6. Went back with my Sovereigns and my Explorers in the last few years and still find a few coins, but it is harder to do now, but a few of my Friends been there and they seem to find a few yet just before the ground freezes, but only a few are found yet.
Sorry I rattled on, but when golf courses are mention it bring back memories of one of the best spot I ever been at and almost missed it being I gave it a quick try and walked away.
