Gota ask this dumb question on the ace 250

I mainly hunt late in the evening so most of my areas are very quiet, so I can hear my MD speaker loud and clear. About the only noise I get is from a car passing by every once in a while...But I have read so much about useing headphones I wonder if I am missing some signals. My dumb question is: When its quiet, will the 250 put out signals that are to low or faint to hear thru the MD speakers? If so maybe thats why I only find clad coins and don't find anything much past 4-5". I tried a set of big stero headphones and the volume about drove me crazy after 5 min., to loud and made my ears hurt. I even tried putting cotton in my ears and still it was to loud.

no i don't think it will make much of a difference wile detecting but you gain a pile more info in pinpoint like how sharp the target signal is & how fast the signal drops off, all very use full info to a coin/jewellery hunter.
i use headphones on the ace all the time :detecting: the headphones must have a volume control or you might blow you ears off .

The headphones I have don't have a vol control. I had a smaller set, think they are walkman type but would not work, so I got an adapter(1/8 to 1/4) from RS and no sound. Thru another thread I found out I need to find out if the 250 is stereo or mono...Anyone know? I have no idea.

The only reason that I put head phones on while swinging the Ace, was to turn down the volume. Someone suggested to me to put ellectrical tape over the speaker, which I did. This reduced the volume by 80%, which was just about perfect for me.
Mick Evans.

I have never found the Ace to put out a faint signal on deep-deep targets. Even the things that are buried up to my elbow sound off like they are on the surface.
Must be a 'all or nothing' thing.

The Ace 250 uses a stereo jack. You don't need expensive headphones. Just get one that has a volume control. Reasons to use headphones are better signal recognition, longer battery life, and the ability to keep your business more private. If you're using the speaker around kids they will want to tag along. Easier to keep things to yourself and easier to ignore them if you're wearing headphones.

I always plug in the ear phones and just leave them resting on the handle of the Ace 250, i can hear everything grand that way

Get headphones and use them!! Not only will you increase your battery life, but you won't be annoying the general public with all the belltones and other sounds your detector makes. I've been around other hunters that didn't use phones and I could hear them beeping even with my phones on and it was annoying me, a fellow detectorist. Our hobby has a bad enough reputation as it is, why give them one more thing to rag on us about. Get a good quality set with a stereo/mono switch and volume control and wear them religously. Buy quality, not some cheapos that will quit on you in a couple of months.

I use headphone in noisy areas and for all the above reasons. But using them in pinpoint mode helps on weak signals. Let me explain. I find myself dropping down into pinpoint a lot of times in areas with very weak signals. I just found a 1800's guilded button that way. In pin point the detector picks up a lot of deeper very weak signal's that the normal modes don't. Using a head phone really helps at those times.

What I don't know is how much I can use the pin point to detect with. Does that circuit have the same ruggedness of the normal mode?

Normally, you don't need anything special to hear targets. In the normal ID motion
mode, all targets basically are the same appx volume, so a weak target will be
about as loud as a strong one. There might be a bit of advantage in the PP mode,
but nothing too great. The signal will pretty much be there, or it won't.
So really, all it boils down to is being able the hear the normal sounds you are
hearing now. Hearing varies among people too. My hearing is pretty good, so
I don't need a lot of volume. I use a single mono earphone. But not as a ear phone,
as the actual speaker on the machine! I can hear everything just fine with it clipped
to my arm band. I've never had to stick it in my ear.
The stock 250 speaker is ultra loud for my tastes.. I had to throttle the volume way down,
as it was way too loud for me. But I also get the benefit of lower battery consumption.
I can hear it fine, but not many others can. Heck, I hear the constant jet turbine
whine on mine.. Like I said, I'm not hard of hearing yet.
I don't like to wear headphones in general when detecting. Get hot, muffle
surrounding sounds, etc..
BTW, if you use phones on a 250, they must have a volume control.
I'm sure someone mentioned it in all the posts.. You'll blast your ears
with it straight. I don't think there is much resistance added to the phone
output, vs the speaker leads.

Yep, me too.. Almost perfect volume for what I want. I clip mine to the arm band.

PLain and simple headphone with the adjustable volume control is best besides it helps save battery life and you can ignore people and you don't have people asking you what it is you found. Yes there is a need for headphones as I have had very faint signals come in while in PP mode. This was shown to me when a friend I was hunting with had a deep signal. The ace picked it up it was over 8" down. To pin point the signal was very weak and very quiet. I took my headphones off and unplugged them and we couldn't hear the PP so back on goes the headphones. It is like safety glasses at work never work with out them. Just like headphones never work without them.

I use a pair of cheapie Walkman headphones, but put them in front of my ears an inch or two, not on my ears. Otherwise, they are way too loud. Have hung them around my neck and that works fine, also.

I agree with all the previous posts. I bought the Garrett Deluxe headphones, with dual volume controls, from Amazon. They had the best price($30-$35). They do help with weak signals in pinpoint mode. They also definitely help lessen the interest of the kids and other looky-loos. I would prefer lighter headphones or earbuds, but the technology isn't there yet.

I bought a pair of KOSS from walmart that has a volume control on them for $5.00 and they work great with the volume turned all the way down.

Me and the wife went to a flea market today, found 2 new cheap walkmans headsets for $1 each. I cut the cord off one and added it to the other, wires where to short. Soldiered the wires, put thin dense foam inside ear cover to deaden the dings and they work great.

So far hasn't help me, I don't mind them that much. But some of the little ones think they have to stand right on top. Afraid of them stepping on my MD when digging, I have to ask them to please step back...And they do... I found out last weekend, don't hunt the parks on the weekends....TO MANY KIDDIES.....I'll stick to weekdays and in the evenings when most are eating supper.
