Yesterday I met a fellow swinging a Deus at one of my favorite detecting spots. While talking to him, I pointed him to a spot where I have found numerous wheats and silver coins. This spot is extremely trashy and figured he would be hard pressed to find even a crusty zinc. Here is what happened and why I am flabbergasted. He would find a signal and I would check his signal with my trusty Fisher F5. I run the F5 hot with only iron partially disced(basically wide open) I have had great success with the F5 and trust this detector 100%.
We checked three targets and with the first two, I did not get a signal period-zilch. He was getting a perfect high 80's low 90's repeatable signal. He dug a six inch plug and found a rusty nail and some sort of other trash. BUT, there was still another target slightly deeper. Out pops a green wheatie! It was about six inches deep and my F5 is more than capable of hitting that target. I was shocked. Signal number 2 was the same scenario, he gets a perfect high 80's and I get nothing. He digs a six inch plug and two kind of junk come out first before he finds a mini ball from the 8 inch range. I am thinking to myself "what am I walking over?" The last target was showing a zinc on his Deus and I was getting a way bouncy 30's to 50's. It turned out to be zinc penny. I would have completely ignored that signal.
My F5 was perfectly ground balanced and set up like I run all the time. I have found 100's of coins and pushing 50 silver coins with this detector. I know it works and is not defective. The clarity and strength of the Deus signals was amazing. For the record, I have used several of the newer fast detectors and up to yesterday, I thought the Racer-Multi Kruzer and Fisher F19 were the king of unmasking.
I will be buying a new detector before next spring. I am still scratching my head trying to digest what I saw yesterday. John if you read this, please private message me.
