Well I'll be darned!

X-70 - Beach mode, tracking on, sensitivity around 16 or so
[attachment 35265 05dime.jpg][attachment 35266 05dimerev.jpg]

I can run it around 19 on average with some areas up to 25 but thats about it. Try to run it too high and it makes that sputtering noise and is in an almost constant null if you notch out a couple of the iron segments. This particular spot was a 16 for sure.

Jerry,

I will be happy when we get the 6" also! The elliptical DD is a good coil but for my hunting it didn't work out. I got tired of all the small shallow stuff reading good. Just me I guess. Now if I hunted beaches it would be a different story. Same thing with the MXT and elliptic coil, it was a good sand hunter but like you, if I'm after gold I'm in the water not on the beach!

I prefer round DD coils over ellipticals for general hunting. Along with the rumored 6" a round DD coil is next on my list. Just can't decide which one to get, the 7.5 Khz or 18.75? I'll probably go with the 7.5 Khz.

When hunting areas with a lot of small iron beach mode lets me run more gain without all the sputtering and bleeps/bloops you get in normal and gives better depth with the slow sweep needed in the nasty stuff. Yes, the exterras are slow sweep detectors, not what some have posted.

Bigger iron fools the detector more in beach mode reading in the low to mid 40's, but by digging the more stable hits you can eliminate most of it. Copper/silver coins hit with a better response and ID lock when hunting in dense small iron in beach mode or so it seems to me. I run the threshold high enough to hear the nulls on the disced out iron and based on that and how the detector is handling the iron in general adjust the sens up or down to suit. It doesn't do any good to be running in those conditions in an almost constant null or with the detector acting up in general due to a too high sens setting. Its quick and easy to adjust the sensitivity on the fly so I take advantage of it. I may adjust it 2-3 times in 10' as I'm working along in iron. Usually, dropping the sens by only a couple points clears things up, eliminating the nulls and letting it see stuff.
