Got the inch

I am thinking of buying a new detector. I am on another forum with a gentlemen that has super hunts with his X-70. Now I understand there are alot of factors that cause a great hunt. If it ain't there you ain't going to find it. I currently use an ACE 250. I Like it alot. I mostly coin shoot. I would like to know if any of you guys, have used these 2 detectors. How much difference would I see if I went over the same areas with the X-70 that I have with the 250? I understand that folks in this hobby are very brand loyal. That is why I would like a fair comparison.

Thanks

Mike

Mate the 250 is a great little detector for the price and if it had a manual ground balance on it alot of people wouldn't hesitate in getting one. In my opinion the 250 will go nearly as deep as the 70 in certain environments no question so depth isn't an issue. The 70 will give you more options on what to dig and not to dig then the 250. The coil range is already great and growing as we speak for the 70. I live in Australia and the ground here can be a pain in the bottom and in most cases I have to turn the sensitivity down to about 4 on the 250 because of these conditions but not the case so much for the 70 as it can tune itself to the ground more efficiently with tracking. Mate if coins is all your after the 250 will do its job but if you want to go to the next level of detecting then the 70 will turn you into a fiend. Give a 70 a trial run if you can as it will benefit you greatly when making your decision. As long as you enjoy the hobby of detecting no matter what detector you use then your a winner already.
Cheers!

If you are hunting clad in the park, keep your money in your pocket. If you want more depth, more sensitivity, better separation, better pinpointing and better discrimination, the X-Terra will do it. For coinshooting, the X-50 may do all you need it to do. Personally, I think the threshold tone and two digit notches are worth the "upgrade" to the X-70.

As to being brand loyal....I've owned 2 Ace 250's and they did a good job for what they cost and what they were designed to do. But they would not do what my XLPro, MXT, DFX, Cortes, C$, 1350 or CZ-5 would do. And, I already told you how I compare it to the X-Terras. By the way, I still have my XLPro, DFX and X-Terras. And I will never sell my Advantage! Different tools for different jobs! :detecting: HH Randy

Thanks Guys-- I live in Tennessee and luckily the ground conditions are not an issue. I wish there was somewhere to try out a machine before shelling out the bucks. Again thanks for the responses.

Parks and such coinshooting the 250 works good, if you want to spend some more money and get more serious/X Terra, I used em both in Tn. and they both work good, the Yellow ones do fine on coins and some rings, jewelry, play area type stuff, and have a good price, both good battery life too, bout same weight, 250 fits behind truck seat little better,
:garrett:or :minelab:=?

I have had the 250 but sold it.

I must say its a very good detector in its price range, possibly the perfect clad hunter. Get the 4.5" coil. It will find deep too.

If you want old relics and coins or even jewelry, the Terra 70 will smash it and even the 50.

If I was to upgrade to a terra 30 only, I would not do it. Probably a better detector but not that much.

I dont care about brands myself. I have always used what works regardless of who makes it. SD,s and GP,S, Goldbugs, Goldmasters and my first machine was a Garrett Groundhog, I have owned them all, except for the GPX4000. The 70 is a killer little machine and with the Prospecting mode option, which I sometimes use in conjunction with the Discriminator patterns when hunting coins and relics and naturally all the time for gold, takes it to another level. A bit like having a super charger added to your already good engine.

since I think they are what Garrett should have evolved into. But they didn't and now it's too late.

I think you would like the Xterra 70, Elvis.

For one, just being able to actually cancel out your ground response will make a big difference. Presets aren't really balanced to anything but work ok in a certain range of ground conditions. But you will notice a difference when you can actually balance the detector to the ground. The deeper and smaller signals will respond better. The Xterra 70 has 4 different methods to ground balance; manual, computer assisted manual, auto tracking, and a beach mode for cancelling out conductive salt.

Next thing you would like is the Target id in pinpoint mode. I like that feature, especially when toward the end of my time out and I get a bit fast with my sweep which causes the iron to false more. For the iffy's I can just do a quick pinpoint and check the number and pass the iron by.

You will notice right away that the notch segments are arranged much better than the Garrett. You get a nice 5 segment foil range, a wide 10 segment mid range, bounded by a nickel segment on the bottom and a zinc segment on top, and a 7 segment high coin range. Much better spread than the Garretts. That last segment is mostly iron wrap.

Tones...well...you get used to them. Digital you know, and sound like some toys you may have run across. But Tone ID is Tone ID and you have some choices to choose from which is nice.

Stay away from the 3kHz coils. The thought behind them was nice but ineffective. You want to get the 5x10 DD HF coil and the 10.5" round DD MF coil. I don't think you have ever used a DD coil and once you start using them you may never go back to a standard size concentric.

I really like the Xterra 70. Let me know if I can talk you into a F-75 cause I really like that one, too. :)

Good luck!

Mike

Having used the Ace and the 50 and the 70. I can honestly say that you will have a very short learning curve and you will never regret getting either one. For the small difference in price I would recommend the X-Terra 70 without hesitation.
