Got some water time in yesterday w/ the Excel...

and didn't find any items of great value but did learn a few things as usual.

1. The +36 ID is not always a larger silver/copper target. I checked several that started off @+36 button ended up being nickels, pennies or clad as more sand was removed. So either they were too deep for proper ID, or the Excel was reading....well, dare I utter the words......OK, halo!....let me catch my breath.....I feel better now, or at least I think I feel better now.

2. I was running Sens=8 and Disc=(-)8 and was getting some small junky/silver open loop earrings in the low minus numbers. The beach had very little small iron or micro foil, and I thought well maybe there are possibly small gold pieces around, so I lowered Disc to (-)16 and really didn't dig any iron. So give it a try if you are in a similar area.

3. As Dr. Tom had posted before, the ability for the Excel to ID different coins that are in a pile is amazing. In the last week I have pulled nickels out of probably a dozen clad drops, yesterday one right next to a quarter. For some reason people at the beach were looking at me strangely, as I was saying to my pooka detector friend,

"Did you see that, did you see what this machine just did?????" Suddenly the beach cleared and I had it all to myself,
they must'a all gone home for supper. :chase:

on those + 36's, thanks for the info Bill. I guess I'm just gonna have to get my Excel wet one of these days.

I don't have a pooka friend, but I do talk to the Loon's that swim by. Sometimes they even stop and talk back. ;)

I noticed two days ago. I use Koss TD80 headphones with the Excel. These have a curled cord that is very flexible. I am right handed and therefore the headphone cord comes up over the top of the coil connector and up to the left earcup.

As I increased my sweep speed I began to get falsing at the end of my swing at it's rightmost movement. Now I was working the waterline and thought it might be the coil travel over the water's edge, wrong. I then thought it might be because I was working a slope and might be getting a coil lift effect at the end of the swing, nope. Then I thought maybe the GB is off, re-GB'ed and no better.

It made no sense that the headphone cord might be an issue since it occured at the furthermost point away from the cord. But I took hold of the cord and pulled it slightly horizontal along my belt line to put some tension on it and prevent the flopping around. Voila! problem corrected.

So I routed the headphone cord over the top of the coil connector, down under the left side of the control box, over the top of the pole below the handgrip going to the right. Continuing to the rear in the space between the upper right arm and lower right stand leg, around the back of the pole and up across chest to left earcup.

Good to go now, no more falsing.

Loons are pretty cool water birds and very curious creatures. When human activity is low they will swim right up to you with no fear and seemingly listen when you talk to them. Kind of like when dogs cock there head to the side.

when dogs "tilit" their head to the side.

Bill,

I have been using Killer B's which have a pretty tight coil to the cord. Still, I do notice a fair amount of falsing at the end of my swing at times. I'll check it out to see if that may be the cause.

Thanks
Tom
