Got some keepers with the SE

detectorbase

New member
Today I hit a yard that I spent a whole day with the XLT last year (only walked away with a single wheatie then). I spent two hours there today with the SE.. and came up with some keepers

1906 Indian Head Penny
1944 S Wheat Penny
1946 D Wheat Penny
1948 S Wheat Penny
1952 D Wheat Penny
1944 S Mecury Dime
Cufflink

The area is super trashy, and was totally blown away that I missed these with the XLT.

Settings..

IM: AM
Tone: Ferrous
Sens: 22 (auto)

Thanks for looking!

with different coils/settings/angles...

and I am sure you will find more.

Sounds like you are making good progress.

Congrats,

Chris

Just goes to show what an Explorer can do on ground previously searched by other brands of detectors. Wait until you get into a spot that has little trash and loaded with old Coins, then you be very happy you went to Minelab Explorer. Good Luck and HH.

but once you get a bit of digging experience, the Explorer is the way to go. If you do the area again with a 5 inch coil and move at a snails pace you will be surprised at how many MORE you will find.

Have to admit Explorers just seem to grab the goodies where other fail however you will be surprised what a different unit or perhaps different accessory coil can produce no matter what the first second or third unit used was...Every spring for the last 10 years hit one old rather large yard with several units and never ceases to amaze me always come away with a keeper or two. Indeed several more trips back is in order as more keepers may end up in your pouch.....

This is what I've determined was different between the two hunts and how this hunt I was able to walk away with some goodies.

#1 The yard if full of nails. When I was swinging the XLT, I was using discrimination. The SE was set in All Metal (I can finally handle it!). The XLT was going through massive nulling. Now I was able to hear squeaks of good stuff in the barage of tones coming in... then zero in.

#2 Tone. The SE, I'm using Ferrous tones, and the XLT I was NOT using tones (I was crazy). Again, another big help.

#3 Coil. I was using the stock 10.5" coil with the XLT. Coupled with the disc and large coil.. no wonder it was nulling like crazy. The SE is using a 8" SunRay Coil.. and I agree, I'd love to the get the SunRay 5" and to see what it can do here.

This particular hunt, I was adopting the SmartFind more as well vs the Digital display. Anything that looked/sounded like nickels I would flip to Digital to get a better feel. I was able to dig a couple pre-65 Jefferson nickels that day as well. I was hoping for a Buffalo or two, but was pleased that I was able to pull a couple of nickels. I'm still learning on the nickels.

Thanks!

Greetings dectorbase,
Thats not bad for a worked out and trashy place. Obviously there
is a difference between both machines. That silver always looks nice coming out of the ground:cheers: Happy Hunting Grounds,

Savage. (EX-II):minelab:

I think one of the main reasons that many hunted out areas came alive again with explorers is because they were(to the best of my knowledge) about the first machines to use DD coils as factory default. DDs look at a different slice of ground than the many previous years of concentric coil units.

Again, sounds like you are making quick progress. Once you get used to hunting with an open screen you will probably find it hard to go back to discrimination and listen to all the nulls.

Thanks Chris

I think I'm already at that point. I'm a believer for AM now. It was a hard transition, but my brain doesn't freak out with all the signals. It's almost like the brain is 'soft-discrimination' now. I glaze over the 'bad' tones, and perk up when I hear something interesting, then I try to make the signal come out clearer.

I have to thank a lot of people on this forum for helping me out. I think I'm on the road to SE success!
