Our little miniature dachound Toby had been feeling under the weather a little for the last couple of days so my wife decided to take him to a new vet. who just opened a office in the area.Understand, I was raised on a farm and have been around animals all of my life.On the farm we always took care of our animals ourselves-treating them when they were sick etc.If the problem was more than we could handle we called on a local vet. who has been in the business for 50 years. The old doc. will treat everything from a dog to a hog or cow and anything in between.
I have always taken care of the basic medical needs of Toby-worming,nail clipping, etc. while taking him to the old country vet for his shots-parvol,rabies,etc..The new clinic is for small animals only and advertised the latest in state of the art animal care.
I am not a doctor of any sort but I have worked in the medical field for several years and made a living taking care of folks with respiratory problems. With Toby not acting quite right and my wife being concerned I checked him out.I listened to him breath with my stethoscope and although he had a slight wheeze his lungs sounded clear. This pretty much ruled out pneumonia.
I didn't take his temp. but by his actions I suspected he had a low grade temp.He was eating and drinking o.k.-really wasn't all that sick just under the weather a little. My diagnosis....He had a cold.
My wife had her doubts, and to ease her mind I agreed that she could take him to the new vet (I had to work)
I got the call this afternoon from my wife. The vet did some blood work-Toby yelped a little when the needle stuck him.The vet listened to him breath, again Toby remained pretty calm. The vet went to take his temperature.....and Toby went nuts!
It was all the vet and his 2 assistants could do to hold the little 9 pound dog down and use the rectal thermometer on him!He tried to eat them up!When they finally finished the vet told my wife that the dog had some serious "issues" and recommended that he be seen by a animal behaviorist...!IE Dog psychitrist!!
The only other problem found was he had a cold!It cost me $100 for me to be told that my dog was nuts and had a cold!I told my wife that I must be nuts too because if 3 strangers tryed to hold me down and stick something up there I sure as heck would do my best to bite them too!
A shrink for dogs!I have heard of things like this on the west coast but never thought I would see it in rural Missouri....The next time that crazy dog needs a vet,I'm taking him to the old country dr.!!
