This are a few quick shots of a small family that got into tapping maple this year with plastic lines. Looks like he taps about anything but I looked in the tank and it had a lot in it so he is doing fine. He started at the top of a big hill and tapped everything he got close to.
These shots should show you how its done. Sure don't have the look and feel of the old time ways. I prefer the old way for myself but I guess if I were selling it I'd do what ever collects the most..... While I was walking some of it, I found and old bottle dump and whats left of a fireplace. Might be a good detecting spot if I can get permission. They start on a hill and run the lines out to the road where they can pull up to the tank. Here are 2 different sites....

#1 is the old fireplace and some lines coming down off the hill....Blue one is mine line, the rest feet to it....The pull them really tight with a small comealong like ratchet that is left in place.

#2 you can see 2 taps feeding a smaller blue that then feeds the big line....

#3 you see a bunch of small feeders meeting the large feed line to the tank....

#4 is the tank it all feeds to down by the road. You can see the ratchet and the finger grips on the main feed lines.

#5 Main feed line next to my hand to show size.... See how nice and clean your hands get with gloves on all winter. No callous.

#6 this looks to be the top surface of and old bottle dump. Again, If I can get permission.

A lot of the old maples are along the edges of the stone walls. They never got cut down like everything else inside the walls....This place is about 3 miles down the road from me on a back road that once was a big farm. A lot of it is like what you see here, but a lot of it is still good pasture and someone keeps it cut all the time. The local cow farms usually lease them....

Nice here today for a change so great to be out doors wandering the woods.

Guess it doesn't have the proper program downloaded that would allow me to view them here. Same goes for those icons we insert from time to time in our messages. Will check them out in the A.M. though.....I wouldn't mind seeing how that's done.

They both do it the same way, same gear but tanks are a little different. His tank looked to be in and old long gone home or barn stone foundation. Found a metal dump there also.... I don't know him at all so need to see if any neighbors might. Anyhow here is his set up for tapping the maple tree's.

#1 Little different tank. I think the home across the street is his place also....

#2 More of the stone foundation. There is some kind of a stone hunt up on top by the big maple....

#3 More feeders, bigger maple tree's in this area....

#4 3 large feeders coming down off the hill thru whats left of the foundation.

#5 A large Sugar Maple

#6 My treasure find of the day. Near the dump was this old Maple Syrup can. Not in bad condition.
Not sure how old it was but it was opened with a church key. Made in Canada....

would not be older than about the mid 80's as i see a metric measurement next to the regular one and Canada got started in metric around that time.
Sure appreciated those photos that make an excellent tutorial!:clapping:

I like the way they do it on the can then the lines.... Less work I'm sure but I like the look of the whole deal with the horses and pails and lids. Then again, I would not be doing it for a living but more just for enjoyment.

Glad you enjoyed the pictures. Geo

Do you have any problems getting permission to get the Maple sap? Does this damage the trees? This may sound dumb, but why could you not do the same thing with an Oak Tree, or Hickory Tree? I find all of this fascinating. Thanks for posting the pictures and information. I keep thinking that years ago, I saw a picture of someone getting the sap, but they did not have all those lines and etc. They just had a single tap with an on/off handle with the bucket hanging from the tap...all very simple. Kelley (Texas) :)

Back in those days, we took a small piece of metal, made it into a vee shape and drove it into the tree. The we put a bucket under the end of the vee and waited.

Seems to have gone hi-tech now,

trees along the road. Don't want them running all over the place. Usually if the put them on the back side of the tree from the road, the Porto Rico natives here leave them alone. If they see them they think its a right to take them.... If its free, they want it... All I see them tap are the maples, but they may use others.
Most just want the maple syrup for breakfast or to mix in milk.. I used to like it mixed in milk... As long as they don't go crazy it don't hurt the tree's...Pretty shallow hole... Our big ones along the road have been tapped by the neighborhood they tell me for about 50 years, and no ill effects. More damage comes from the road salts I think. Ours are very old along the road....Some are starting to die off in sections.... We have one, my kids call the Talking Tree. They saw a cartoon or movie that reminded them of it and they have always called it that. I suspect we will loose it in the next 10 years...Big tree but has a lot of cavity's in it. Thats usually where they go.... I will get a picture of it.. Big tree that will end up in the wood stove also.. Maple burns nice....
I like the old way with the spigots and buckets with lids.... More simple... I like the look of the harvest that way. Then plastic lines, not so much.... We bought a little sprayers tank for the quad and would go collect it with that.... Its a lot of work for what you get, but what else you going to do this time of year.... Ground is to soft to really drive on it, nothing is green or close to it. Just clean up on the trails from all the branches ands tree's that the winter storms topple. Good time for benchrest shooting also... NO BUGS out yet....
