Got Out With The 3D.

It was 78 here today, so I got a chance to get out with mine. First time it's been out of the box. I hunted with the 5" coil for about 3 hours. Found the usual clad, etc. Did get a real nice '38d Mercury with full bands. It was very corroded though when it came out of the ground, but cleaned up nicely. It was only about 4" deep and was probably missed because of the corrosion. It would give a high tone, but also would read square tab in the ground. There was something about the signal that said to dig it. I'm not sure I would have if I wasn't using the Enhanced Mode. I was quite surprised as I've hunted this particular park myself for over 30 years and didn't expect much. I also got a fairly large man's silver Maltese Cross ring marked .925 so I'm very satisfied with the maiden hunt.

Nice job with your 3-D. The more I hear about this detector the more I am thinking of getting one!

Did you resweep the hole after recovering the Merc? I'm not sure about the 3D, but on my CZ-5, when I get a bouncing High Coin / Zinc / Square tab reading, it's usually a nickel and another coin co-located together so tightly that my CZ averages the targets.

The finds will only get better. I agree that you wouldn't have gotten that signal on the Merc with most machines. Keep us posted on how you do.

78 DEGREES!!!! WTH?, I'm tickled to death if we hit the 50s.

Allen, I thought the same thing and expected another coin, or something else, in the hole, but nothing. At first I thought it would be impossible to even get a date on this one as it looked like coins do when they have been in heavy fertilizer. I carry a film canister with water and a small shot of liquid soap just for things like this. After I dug it, I put it in the container and continued hunting. After I got home, I just used an old toothbrush, and a little more hand soap to lightly clean it. I was surprised how well it came out, and the condition it was actually in. Still has mint luster.

Fun, huh?

That's Denver for you. A week ago Saturday, it was 13 below and broke two days low records in a row. I love Colorado.

I was using the Enhanced Mode in one of those settings that really calls for the Salt, or Normal on a regular CZ, Mode. I just went along real slow, listening to all the aluminum and iron. Some, but not all, square tabs have the same electronic signature as a zinc penny. I dug one, then checked those signals in both modes to eliminate the tabs. That worked well.

The crispness of the signal from a CZ is something. Switching around units from time to time, I forget just how snappy they are. I did notice that the 3D seems to be even more so in the Enhanced Mode. Now I just have to get it on the right kind of site.

Hunting in the Enhanced Mode, in the type of site I hunted yesterday can be intense due to all of the signals, but I expected that. Again, as heavily as this park is hunted, City Park for those around here, it just doesn't give up the silver quite as easily as it used to. When I first started hunting it in '75, it was not unusual to come home with two pockets full of coins, tokens and jewelry, with anywhere from 10 to 20 pieces of silver. Those were the days.

They're not for everyone, but if you're willing to take the time to learn it, and what to expect at various sites, it will pay off. Any CZ, for that matter, is a hard unit to beat for all-around, flat-out, performance.

Good luck with your decision.

Having said that, I have one site that was a store in the 1880's and I have pulled 160 coins total, 15 silver (including WLHalf, 3 Barber qrtrs), 40+ IHs, 1 Shield nickel, 3 V-nickels, Gobs of wheats. I'm still working this site from time to time with my 5" coil and always get a few more coins.

Hi Dave,

That sounds like a great site. Just keep working it. I have one like that, too. Over 200 pre-1881 coins have come out of the site. Very little left but the gold coins that are being masked by all of the iron. Sure would like to find a way to get to them. Most all of the coins were within 3 inches, or on the surface.
