Got out with my new SOV GT.------WOW

Got out today for about 2 hrs.,only found 1 wheat back cent but did get to know the machine better. One tip I might pass along,I carry a fat IH cent in my pocket for setting my disc.If I turn my disc. all the way up I'll get coins BUT not the fat IH cents.I set my disc.to were I get a sold hit on the cent.As can be seen in the pic, this machine doesn't miss much. Now if I can find where all the OLD coins are hiding. HH Bob

I believe a fat IH will read like many pull tabs do which should be around 150-160 on the meter, so if you set the disc to just get these then you will disc out the nickles and the gold rings that read in that area.
If you are just looking for fatties on up then this is fine, but you still will get some pull tabs too don't you?
This is what is nice with the Sovereigns as the tones and meter is used for IDing, so once you know where the fatties read and sound like you can dig that number and the ones for the coins you want.

This is the time of year I search a lot of bean and corn fields rather than parks, like in the summer.I'll have to check that about the nickles.I do get some pull tabs/ring pulls, but where I search, they're not an issue.I've seen posts here? and over on the Nautilus forum about turning the disc. all the way up and still getting coins, but whats being missed???I also have the Nautilus 11B and this seems to hold true on this also.HH Bob

Actually if you are in the area where where you may find fatties there is the chance of the 3 cent nickles too which will from what i am told read lower than a nickle, so these too will be missed plus any smaller gold coins too.
We hunt some farm fields too when we can where older ball field and race track were with the Explorers and the only thing we want to disc out is iron, so we open up the iron mask all the way up so we can hear the different tone of iron. With the Sovereign we run them wide open with no disc and dig anything that is a positive signal and not nulling. Some bigger iron may come though too, but with relic shovels it is easy to check out. What we find at these site like you do is there is none of this modern trash we see in parks and ball field used today so we need no disc.
What I love about the Sovereign myself with good set of headphones like my Timberwolfs I use, even though I am very hard of hearing I can tell the way the signal sounds with the tone if it is a signal I want to check out, cant do that with the Explorer as I have to work those signals a bit more. With the disc set as low as it will go the only thing that is disc out is the iron, but if it is a newer site loaded with pull tabs and the area not old enought to hold the seated half dime (never got one yet) or older nickles or 3 cent nickles and not worried about gold then I would turn my disc up to max as i still will get IH all the way up to silver coins. If I want the gold, the older type coins and I feel I want the depth I better be running my disc as low as it will go and check all positive signals.

Thanks for the mental jog.I forgot all about the 3 cent coin.I saw how sensitive the sov is yesterday.I got a hit that sounded like the door on my truck. After digging a fair sized hole I found the face part of a eagle cuff botton.I've Been hunting since 1964 and never found a gold coin. For me that would be a real prize. I have been detecting since 1973 and used a Whites before disc, learned a lot and got a lot of gold rings. Disc spoiled me and also don't see the gold rings anymore, but since using the Sovereign my gold rings are starting to show up again.
One of the local guys got a $5 gold this past summer in a farm field, but he was digging anything and everything that was not iron.
Good luck on finding your first gold coin as there has to be one with our names on it you would think.
I wonder how many gold coins people go over thinking it is a pull tab??
