Got out this morning and this evening at an old home site..

I happened across this site the other day on the way home. Don't see many hay fields around my home and this one is only a mile from me. Don't know why I hadn't noticed it before. When I checked my plat maps, I discovered a home site on the 1874 map that didn't show on the 1909 map. It took a couple of hours to locate the brick, broken dishware and other signs of a home site and at first I didn't make any good finds. Today was different, though I had to end up using my 4x6 and 5.3 coils because of the plentiful iron and hotrocks.

I can't read the date on the large cent. The ring is sterling and the seated silver is a dime. The other thing is a broach or pendant but it looked old so I included it. You'll notice I scratched the penny pretty badly. The ground at this site is so hard that I have to use a hand pick to break the soil loose and I wasn't being careful enough.

Those are awesome finds Phil. It paid off to do your research and I bet it will keep paying. The pendant is a unique one. Unique, but strange. You can see where there once was a stone. Is there any way you can get the date off of the large cent? Big congratulations to you and thanks for sharing your finds!! :clapping: HH to all, Nancy

with my 10x loop I can see what I think is a "7" where the last digit of the date would be. I might try peroxide or olive oil, I certainly can't hurt it any more after scratching it so badly It's hard to be delicate with a garden tool! I normally dig with a treasurewise long handled trowel and a narrow blade round tip screwdriver so it is quite a change. Nothing about 4in of rain wouldn't help.LOL

Nice finds Phil, very nice.:thumbup::clapping:

Instead of olive oil, why not use 3-in-One Oil? The olive oil gets rancid plus the other cleans it a bit better without damage. JMHO. We've put the coins in a little shot glass with a squirt of the oil and leave it overnight. Wish you had some of our rain. We're to get it again today and possibly storms. HH to all, Nancy
