I went to this old farm house that I knew was at least built in 1875 and come to find out that the barn out back was built 1818 Lots of dirt has been moved around there but I have some old photo's of the place from 1875 and there are some places that a few coins could be hiding or so I hope.

The Merc is a 42D and the Barber is a worn 1902. The other worn coin is just a hair smaller than the merc and is about half as thick! Anyone have any ideas on what it could be?????? I can't find my loop right at the moment so I can't get a closer look. The indian was in pretty bad shape 1859.

Thanks for checking out my finds!!!

WTG Mike!!!!! Very nice finds you have there..............:) I wonder if the one that is worn so bad could be a seated dime maybe? I have never found one yet, but that is my guess. HH.

Eddie

Maybe I know seated dimes and 3 cent pieces are thinner but it would be nice if one could figure out what it could be! I know it rang up like silver but I will have to look at it closer might be able to find something on there that could identify it hopefully.

I meant to say half dimes are thinner not seated dimes! But I think half dimes are smaller in size I think.

Mike,
I think it's too big to be a half dime but 3cent piece and seated dime are still possibilities.

Yea I agree! I sure wish I could find my loop! After moving 2 times over the winter I can't seem to find it!!!! I agree it's not a half dime!

A 3-cent silver is smaller than a dime. It looks like there is a partial outline on the left center of the coin where it appears could be the figure of a seated. Also to the right and closer to the top it looks like the pole that the seated has on it. And there is a line going across the bottom of the coin which tells me it is a seated dime. Congratulations on all those great finds and hope you find more like them.

bust half dime maybe...just the shape of it or maybe a smaller Reale?? Are the edges of the one coin smooth or have ridged edges? Nice finds all around anyways, even the fatty is a good one!!

Mike,

I've found a couple of seated almost that thin. Got a picture of some posted over on the Explorer Classroom. That is where the expression "one thin dime" comes from.

It is definitely not a three cent or half dime. It might be bust or Canadian or some other foreign coin.

It's so worn it's really hard to tell about the ridges. Some times I think I can make out a ridge but then again there are so many scratches on it. It's really hard to tell. I might have to find a way to measure the width of the coin and or weight! Any idea's on other ways to maybe identify it?

1857 Seated Half Dime last year and just compared them and it's not as small as the half dime!

is because its not as big as a dime, too big to be a half dime or silver three cent piece..bust coins are just bigger than thier seated counterparts, a bust dime is bigger than a seated/barber dime and thats why I'm thinking bust, if no ridges then I say maybe bust...also I'm thinking the reale's might be just a bit bigger as well...but you have to check with those east coast hunters about that...about all I know to help!

Thanks Jack I will have to check into what diameter bust dimes are and seated dimes ect ect and then measure what I got and just go from there! A microscope would be nice as it's to hard to hold a flash light and then a loop ect ect!!! Thanks for your opinion :)

If you have some aluminum foil, you can take it and cover the surface of the coin and very gently rub the surface of the coin and if there are any impressions left in the coin they might just show up on the aluminum foil. Try both front and back and see if anything materializes onto the foil. I can tell you that when they are that wore that the reeded edge will not be there. I found a seated dime between 2 v-nickels and there was an outline of the seated figure on the obverse. It doesn't stick out of the coin like you would think, but it is like a greenish grey deposit left that shows the figure. Hope you can get a picture of the other side posted and hopefully you can use the aluminum foil trick to pull something off the coin. Good Luck.

get a pocket caliper 100mm and check diameter and thickness. A half reale is about 15.5mm diameter and about 1mm thick. Just under size of a seated dime which is 16.5mm approx.

Get some Wright's anti-tarnish silver polish liquid and remove the black. Then you might be able to see more. Get a macro pic about 5-6" from coin and directly above coin and then look at that pic. it will be blown way up in size including any details left on coin. If flash causes problem - cover flash with a single piece of tissue while taking pic.

I like to see a macro (up close) dead on pic of the coin. I can almost see what looks like a crown pointing 90 degrees east on that coin but with wrong angles and dirt - almost impossible to correctly identify.

Either way - some real nice finds there! WTG! :clapping:
