Got out for a little while this afternoon...

and I had a little bit of good luck. Now it wasn't anything as awesome as Todd's Pine tree shilling and unlike Craig I did not find mine around pine trees, in fact there wasn't even any silver, but for me, it was really good!!:thumbup: I found my first coin of the year, a 1984 quarter (I would have preferred silver, but a quarter is a lot better than a poke in the eye from a stick!!). I also found my first wheaties of the year, 1911 and 1917 (the wheaties I usually find are 1940's models, so these were both pleasant surprises:happy:) I also found a 1 mill Alabama Luxury Tax Token. Unfortunately, the state didn't date them:thumbdown: I also found a small metal button with no writing on it and a metal whatzit. All in all a good 2 hour hunt:thumbup::thumbup: I hope to get out a lot more this year than 2005; so far so good:yo: Here are some pics of my finds today:

The first two pictures are all the finds together.

using a painters brass brush ,(one of those small 25 cent ones)gets the dirt and gunk off those tax tokens really nice. it polishes them up really nice. have to use a little elbow grease on them.:wiggle:

From the current photo it appears to be a lead bale seal. Is it lead?

.... it can work on tax tokens too like it does on copper.

Pour some hydrogen peroxide in a small shallow bowl, nuke it in the microwave for about 20 seconds ... or until boiling, drop in the token ... watch the gunk bubble off. Repeat until clean. As far as brushing, you may want to consider a nylon tooth brush as it won't scratch as much as a brass brush.
