Got out for 2 hours with the GT

The GT is differnt than any of the other Sovereigns I found out. I set mine up the way i set up all my Sovereigns before with the sensitivity at the 10-11 o'clock postion, left it with a threshold and iron mask on for the depth as it has been on for the Sovereigns i have used. I run disc at all the way counterclockwise like the notch. I didnt have a SunRay probe on it yet, but had a SunRay DTI 3 meter for it so I used my Uniprobe with the built in headphones. First thing I notice is the tones with these headphones are not a sweet as my Timberwolfs are. I coulnt tell the tones as easy without looking at the meter.
The signals on deeper target i dug that normaly would be good coins with my other Soveregins, but with the GT they were nails and other iron. I had to back off the sensitivity to auto and still got some. This tells me the new GT is more sensitive than any of the other ones. I found out that I had to rethink they way I run my Sovereigns as I was digging way too much iron than normal. I found that I had to recheck many of these good signals by going all the way around them keeping the target in the hot band, then go to all metal and try to pinpoint, then go back to disc and recheck where the target was. The iron and nails would not read all the way around, or when I pinpointed to get on the exact spot they would null in disc. Sometimes it was only one way, but all good target when I switched back to disc from all metal pinpoint would be no question they were good as as soon as I swithced back without even movng the coil the tone would be climbing. I also found what others have said and that it is it sees smaller targets as i got several that smaller than I seen with the Sovereigns before.
I tried hunting with the iron mask off and seen where I didnt think the depth was as good, or not as sensitive as when it is on in the nail infested area I was at today.
This one for those that know the Sovereign well will see it is a bit differnt and feel you will have to do a little more learning on this one, but I expect to see some very impressive depth and smaller size that some of the target will be. I also feel if you had a problem learning the Sovereign and gave up, the GT will not be any easier to use.
This is just a quick hunt I did today and will need to use it more to know it better.
My finds in a well worked area was only 3 wheaties, 5 new pennies(some of these were 6 inches deep) a nickle at 6 inches and a few misc items I am cleaning in my rock tumbler.

What was the moisture content like??
Would guess your dirt is loose and low density right now as mine is after all the frost.
Might be better after the dirt gets settled some .
Will have to see if mine works the same way.

Thanks always good to hear the straight scoop from a avid sov. user,,,

I often wonder if I have the sensitivity set correct on my Sovereign when searching in manual. This week I have been experimenting with different settings on the GT. As we know the Sov likes to do its own thing in it's own time, you may wish to try this and let me know what you think.
Ultimate sensitivity setting for your soil
Set the thresold to a slight hum, with the machine in discrimination mode, turn the sensitivity fully up(counter clockwise)without clicking into auto. Now slowly lower the coil to the ground from 12inches down to 1 inch and listen for the threshold, it will most likely dissapear, make sure no Iron is underneath, lower the sensitivity setting and try again, keep lowering the coil and adjusting the sensitivity until you reach a stable threshold with little or no change as the coil approaches the ground. When this is achieved you have the best sensitivity for that particular soil. I have tried this method on different types of soil,it appears to work well.

Will give that a try.
The GT will be here later this week.
The first things that I planned to do..........
Check to see how well the band switch works around noise.
To see if the sensitivity peaks at 11 o'clock like my 2a does. If not, then where? If peaking, then is it the same in both band switch positions?
Gonna be fun.
Thanks for the tip. I'll try anything once.

The biggest problem will be finding a area where there are no targets to do this. I think most around here the threshold will disapear when lowering the coil to the ground.
I will have to try this next time out and see what happens. Thanks for the tip.

It works OK over here, its always nice to get feedback from other countries.

its the same deal for the elite i am assuming...I will try as i do notice differences ...from site to site ,,,

Accualy I tried it on Tuesday too. I went to all metal so I knew there was not any metal under the coil and at max it still kept the threshold. After I did this a few time raising and lowerering the coil I lost the threshold and decided to use my 11 o'clock settings. This GT I notice will try to lock on to the iffy signals and make them good, kind of reminds me of the new Quattro that does this. Anyway I got many 180 signals normaly would be good, but these were iron. I find by checking these by pinpointing helps a lot as when I know the coil is centered over the target and go to disc again to get a accurate ID reading. Found 5 pennies in the 60s at 6-7 inches deep and a 1981 quarter at 4 inches I thought was a beer can. I also got a 1918 wheaties from this yard i worked with the XS2 and the Explorer XS and missed.
Today i went to a farm feild that is corn stubble and hard to swing the coil in and tried this method again and did see at max sensitivity it would lose its threshold and found that the 12 o'clock postion seem to be where the threshold didnt changed. The feild use to be a picnic grove from years ago and had some big trees that were cut down and the stumps burried, so things have been changed bad time. Threshold stayed fairly steady with the low tone of iron, so I tried the silent search mode and now can see why David at Dixie like this for relic hunting as I wondered if the detector was even on as it run so quiet. I did get a few blips once in a while from iron, but over all it runs smooth. Now when I found a area where I got a lot of little blips I went back to a threshold and went slower. When it was steady threshold again I would go back to a silent threshold and while in silent threshold I got a good signal that came right though with no problem. It was a 1918 merc that was 7 inches deep and rang though loud and clear. Everything else I found in the hour and a half were shotgun shells and a few 22 casings.
I feel like David that this may be the best Sovereign Minelab has made, but it may take a little longer to get used to with it falsing on some iron more than the other Sovereigns, but using a little more time checking out a deep signal will help digging the iron.
Will have to try that sensitivity setting at a few more places and see how it will work.
