Ok, add my name to the list of Vision owners. Now I'm no longer all that interested in the "comparison" class of questions, but instead, how to evolve from a dedicated XLT user into a Vision user.
I've read the "all you need to know" pamphlet that came with the detector, and many of the posts on this forum. I especially appreciate those of you who are trying to help people along, rather than the ones who seem to think that their manhood is directly related to the brand of detector they use.
Now to the questions:
The first thing I did after reading the little pamphlet was to go out into my yard (I don't have a test garden) and just toss some coins out on the grass to see what the detector would do. I was surprised that in the "analyze" mode, clad quarters did not present the nice bell-shaped curve I thought I would get from the pictures I've seen. Instead I got all three colors squished together very low, or sometimes there was separation but they looked like a roller coaster with ups and downs, but not bell-shaped. Several times the red was above the green. Since there's no silver in a clad quarter, maybe the high red is to be expected. Is that an accurate analysis, or is there something I'm missing or not doing right?
After puttering around in my yard for a short time, I went to a neighborhood where I've recently had success with my XLT finding wheaties and a few silver coins. I fired up the Vision and noticed several things. Like many have reported, the cordless headphones were way too loud for me. I'm going to have to use other headphones until the "fix" is available.
I decided to use the "coin and jewelry" setting. The only things I tweaked were putting the volume on minimum, using tone id, and vco pinpointing.
Then, despite my efforts to ground balance the detector with the trigger and Enter buttons, I just kept getting beeps that seemed to be random. I noticed I was under a power line, which had never been a problem with the XLT. Since I had left my manual at home, I just chose to move elsewhere rather than try to figure out how to deal with the line. In a post earlier, someone told me that power lines shouldn't be a problem for the Vision. If that's the case, I don't know what was wrong. So, in the case of instability, is there a certain order I should follow in adjustments? What should I change first, second, and third?
When I did get higher sounds, even 83 VDI numbers, what was in the ground was rusty nails. I also got a bottle cap. Needless to say, after reading of the great finds others have found on their first trips out, I was not real pleased. However, I'm patient and I really want t learn this machine and how to take advantage of all that it offers. I do believe in it and I know I'm smart enough to eventually figure it out. Even so, if there's help out there for anything I've mentioned I would sure appreciate it.
Thanks again to all,
Mike
