Got one!!!!! Now the questions change

Ok, add my name to the list of Vision owners. Now I'm no longer all that interested in the "comparison" class of questions, but instead, how to evolve from a dedicated XLT user into a Vision user.

I've read the "all you need to know" pamphlet that came with the detector, and many of the posts on this forum. I especially appreciate those of you who are trying to help people along, rather than the ones who seem to think that their manhood is directly related to the brand of detector they use.

Now to the questions:

The first thing I did after reading the little pamphlet was to go out into my yard (I don't have a test garden) and just toss some coins out on the grass to see what the detector would do. I was surprised that in the "analyze" mode, clad quarters did not present the nice bell-shaped curve I thought I would get from the pictures I've seen. Instead I got all three colors squished together very low, or sometimes there was separation but they looked like a roller coaster with ups and downs, but not bell-shaped. Several times the red was above the green. Since there's no silver in a clad quarter, maybe the high red is to be expected. Is that an accurate analysis, or is there something I'm missing or not doing right?

After puttering around in my yard for a short time, I went to a neighborhood where I've recently had success with my XLT finding wheaties and a few silver coins. I fired up the Vision and noticed several things. Like many have reported, the cordless headphones were way too loud for me. I'm going to have to use other headphones until the "fix" is available.

I decided to use the "coin and jewelry" setting. The only things I tweaked were putting the volume on minimum, using tone id, and vco pinpointing.

Then, despite my efforts to ground balance the detector with the trigger and Enter buttons, I just kept getting beeps that seemed to be random. I noticed I was under a power line, which had never been a problem with the XLT. Since I had left my manual at home, I just chose to move elsewhere rather than try to figure out how to deal with the line. In a post earlier, someone told me that power lines shouldn't be a problem for the Vision. If that's the case, I don't know what was wrong. So, in the case of instability, is there a certain order I should follow in adjustments? What should I change first, second, and third?

When I did get higher sounds, even 83 VDI numbers, what was in the ground was rusty nails. I also got a bottle cap. Needless to say, after reading of the great finds others have found on their first trips out, I was not real pleased. However, I'm patient and I really want t learn this machine and how to take advantage of all that it offers. I do believe in it and I know I'm smart enough to eventually figure it out. Even so, if there's help out there for anything I've mentioned I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks again to all,

Mike

Hi Mike i will be watching your reports like you i had an XLT the vision will have to be good to beat it. i got rid of my XLT for a DFX big mistake, now do i go back to a XLT or go for a Vision.

If you ground balance away from the power lines first, then go back under them all you need to do is try another frequency or maybe drop the sensitivity

I would be inclined to use the deep silver programme or the hi pro, and run it in 2.5 kHz or maybe 7.5kHz as this is the same frequency the XLT ran at.

The thing to remember about DD coils is there better in mineralised ground but pick up more iron that said you should not be getting rusty nails reading at 83 did you take the nail out of the hole to see if anything else was under there?

Hi,

First off, if you are getting interference lowering the Disc Gain a little or the RX Gain a litle or a combination of both will do the trick. This is easily accessed with the Sensitivity live control.

You can also experiment with the frequency offset both plus and minus as this may help. This is easily accessed through the Transmit Frequency live control.

As a last resort, electrical interference usually occurs more in the lower frequency ranges. If you can't get it to clear up any other way try going to the 22.5 kHz single frequency mode. This also is easily accessed through the Transmit Frequency live control.

I'm right next door to a large Air Force base and so have to deal with more interference issues than most people.

Thanks for the responses so far. I'll have to start tweaking things to see if I can get things to calm down a bit. Then maybe I will be sharing some nice silver coins!

Like I said before, I really believe in this machine and I know that it's just a matter of time before I get the hang of it.

Thanks again,

Mike

Mike,

Glad to hear I'm not the only one that had issues like yours. You'll definitely get it soon enough.

Recently I buried a quarter at 12" and could see it good enough to dig, with 2.5kHz only, Disc Sense at 90, Rx Gain at 5, Ground Filter at 5.0Hz High, Response Delay of 50, Coins Program, Tone ID ON. If you get the noise, definitely start adjusting the Rx Gain down first, Disc Sense is kind of like a fine tune but try to keep it above 80 for max depth.

As far as interference... I noticed at my location 0 offset was good, but -5 and +5 were BAD... some other frequencies were OK, but 0 offset worked great. I suspect you may need to play with that.

Definitely make sure you re-ground balance after you adjust your Rx Gain or change frequencies. I noticed the 12" quarter could disappear if I did not do that after making changes. Maybe I should start to play with the Locktrac because once you set it it should stay put, it's not like we have a coin garden everywhere we go so we can make sure we can still see deep signals if we haven't GB'd in a while.

HH!

Hi Bret

Are you still getting issues with power lines electrical interference.

I suspect some of it may be down to the coil, i bought a D2 coil for my DFX, if i ran it in the best data it was reasonably quite.

I search for thin section hammered silver coins, so need a high frequency search mode

The problem i had was when i went into the 15 kHz single frequency the detector became unstable, constantly sounding off, and to be honest unusable.

I eventually got rid of the DFX because of this problem

I am now looking at either going back to a trusty XLT or the Vision.

The thing worrying me is if i go for the vision with the D2 coil is it going to be sounding off on every sweep if i try and use the 22 kHz single frequency.

I have never had any issues with any Whites machines and electrical interference in the past, i have always found them very good at working under power lines

So it has to be either the higher frequency or the D2 coil that is causing the problems

As i said running best data the machine settled down a bit

Mike,

I also just got my hands on a Vision(yesterday-wooohoooo!) and experienced the same interference right off the bat at my home. I am a long time user of a XLT and yes I tried the DFX and did not really like it like so many others. Try this: put the machine in Analize mode and see where the "rippled" freq is and that freq is probably your problem.Mine was the 2.5 band. I went to freqs and turned that one off. Stable as a rock now. I have to add that although my XLT is not really affected with the interference at my home, my F75 went crazy as well as other machines I have tried over the years. There was no work around for the Fisher that would make it useable at all except turning the sensitivity down to almost 0. This Vision is a keeper for sure in my book. :clapping::whites::thumbup:

Hi megadivers

As you have both the Vision and the Fisher 75 perhaps you could do some depth comparisons between the two machines this would be very interesting, another interesting test would to compare the two machines for recovery speed against iron.

Personally i had a fisher f-75 and found it far to unstable to use in my soil conditions, i am now going back to a Whites XlT or the new Vision

The vision is not available in the UK yet but when it arrives i will give it a further 6 months to see what is been said before buying.

If it's not as deep as an XLT then i will be getting an XLT

Just a thought have you tested the depth of the Vision agaist the XLT

By that I mean changing to a smaller search coil. I'm going to use the 5.3 Eclipse tomorrow because a few selected sites are just too trashy.

Evolution takes time. I've not cared for the DFX but have been an XLT fan since their release in early '94. Still, I have preferred the 6000 Pro XL over the XLT for depth, ease-of-use, and raw performance. You're working with a known, proven detector for you, and you know the programs and settings. You're going from a 6.59 kHz unit to a 3-frequency Vision, and until we get a manual with the factory listings for the provided programs (I sure hope they don't forget that!) we won't be able to see differences in the programs at a glance.

Most importantly, in my opinion, is the change in stock coil design. I don't know which coil you usually would use on your XLT, but with the XLT or 6000 Pro XL/XL Pro I have generally preferred one of the 6
