got new Exp II --help anyone

I just bought a new Exp II and would like some opinions on settings for my planned use for the detector. I am retired-living in N.Y. state that is really rich in revolutionary sites which I have access to. I would like some suggestions for that use. ALSO I make periodic visits to Arizona and would like to use this deteceor for gold only. I was told that I may have to purchase another detector for gold only because the Exp II does not do a good job detecting gold only. I notice that other "gold only" detectors do not go as high in frequency as the Exp II. Someone told me that the higher the frequency the smaller gold nuggets can be detected.
I cannot give my e-mail address because I am in the process of moving and gave my computer away. So Im using my daughters temorarily. Thanks ahead for the help.

Fred, it is good to see you in the hobby. No detector will only detect gold so that one is kind of out the window. The frequency is a factor in how small a piece of metal any detector will detect. Higher frequencies will detect smaller pieces of metal that includes gold. However, most detectors designed for prospecting/gold detection operate between about 50khz to 80khz. Some go lower but the idea is for very fine flour it takes a high frequency but for a larger piece of gold such as a nugget they can be detected with lower frequencies depending on the size. The Explorer will detect gold nuggets and might be best with the small coil. As a general rule of thumb the smaller a coil I the smaller a piece of metal it will detect. So, there are some outstanding detectors for gold nugget hunting, Minelab has them, so it depends preference and how much money one wants to invest.
If I was going to use the Explorer for gold nugget hunting it would be at IM-16 and in manual and hunt very slow. Adjust the sensitivity to at least above 5 so you don

Cody--- thank you for the response to my question. I read the Andy S. book that I borrowed from a new friend and just read it. Its really informative and has some basic settings that I can build and improve on. I do not find the Exp II too complex so far but I also understand it will throw me some curves as I use it more.
Any help with basic settings would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Much

The factor presets are great for the new users but there are a number of setting that can be changed to really run the detector hot or fairly cold. The setting depend on what we are looking for if we need a lot of depth or only very little. I will list a very hot program to hunt for old coins.
With the detector at the factor defaults as a starting point make the following adjustments. I will list a suggested range for the setting and then my setting.
Adjust the Audio Volume Gain for 8 to 10 (10)
Adjust the Sensitivity for 16 to 28 (2:geek:
Set the Iron Mask between -6 to -16 (-16 to -10 based on amount of trash metals.)
Audio Volume Max (Use headphones to adjust the volume with the detector audio volume set to max.)
Adjust the audio Th. Tone Lowest, Audio Tone Variability, and Audio Tone Limits as follows. For the adjustments use a piece of rusty iron about the size of a half dollar and a silver quarter. Select Menu, then Tone and notice that the adjustments are listed as Th Tone, Variability and Limits. Sweep the coil over the iron and then the silver and notice the tones are low for the iron and high for the silver quarter. Set the Th Tone, Variability, and Limits for the highest and lowest tone you prefer as you sweep the coil over the silver and iron. If Th Tone is set high and Limit is to maximum then the high sound for silver can be extremely high and hard for me to deal with. Adjust between these three controls for the sound you like on the quarter and iron.

Audio Sounds - Most users seem to prefer Conductivity. (Ferrous)
Options Response

Cody--- Sorry for not responding sooner because Im in a mortal battle with the flu. Any way , thank you again for your time in explaining some basic settings for my new Exp II. I will try them as soon as the snow leaves the ground
Thanks Fred D.
