Got my Vaquero...

cjruger

New member
Found a few coins in my back yard, nothing older than 81, lots of crap in my yard, went to the park today and found 2 nickels and a dime in the same hole, and about 4 pennys and a crap load of assorted pull tabs and beer caps and all kinds of other junk,, Should the discrimination not hit on a nail at all when it is turned up past tabs? because mine hits on big nails and large bolts sometimes even if I turn it all the way up. Also I put my gold wedding ring on the ground and had to turn the disc down under a nickel to get it to beep. Im starting to get the feel of it thou, does this sound like common behaivor for these?

Hi Cjruger,

You asked:

Should the discrimination not hit on a nail at all when it is turned up past tabs?
Because mine hits on big nails and large bolts sometimes even if I turn it all the way up.

Nails and other steel items can somehow build up a stronger signal in the ground once they have
been there for a while. Some people call this a "halo effect". This effects all MD's to some degree.
Oddly enough, there are some nails that the V will not pick up at all in the discrimination mode,
even with the discrimination mode turned all the way down. The VCO all metal mode will pick-up
anything that the disc mode rejects on the low end of conductors. When you learn this machine,
you can use it such a way that it will not miss much of anything. It's a great machine. After getting
a better handle on it you should be better able to ID targets.

Then you asked:

Also I put my gold wedding ring on the ground and had to turn the disc down
under a nickel to get it to beep. I'm starting to get the feel of it thou, does this sound like common
behavior for these?

Yes that sounds like normal behavior. Smaller gold jewelry is even lower on the discriminator.

If you like finding gold, you will have to lower your discrimination and dig a lot more in the lower
range. That's a challenge. Trick is to be where there is a good chance of finding it.

If you want to find gold chains, you may miss some of them in the discrimination mode, even with
the discrimination turned all the way down. Gold chains are a challenge. If there is not a large link
or a catch on the chain, and it is small, you may have to be in the VCO all metal mode to detect it.
That's why I hunt in the all metal mode when I'm trying to find gold jewelry.

There is no TID machine that can tell the difference between gold and trash. That's why many
people stress the use of quality headphones, whether you have a TID or not. Many people say
the TID causes them to miss a lot of good targets because they are watching the screen instead
of listening to the signal.

I like gold, and I am not rich enough for a $2,000 machine. I couldn't lug the thing around anyway.
They weigh a ton.

I think the best bet for finding jewelry, for me is a machine like the Vaquero. I have three other MD's
I use also. They are all Tesoro's. Most other brands are just not as good at finding small gold jewelry.
There are other good MD's besides Tesoro. Tesoro is what I am comfortable with. It works well for me.

Take the time to learn what the Vaquero is telling you and you will increase the quality of your finds.

Best of luck with your V,

ok, thanks for the input, I was in an area that had a ton of trash( pull tabs and beer caps, nails and wires, foil....) it seems like you can tell if its a coin if it hits hard in 1 little spot. except the pull tabs hit the same way and some of them hit even with the disc turned almost all the way to the max. but i guess thats something ill have to deal with .

Hay again Cjruger,

I know how frustrating it can be. May be my story will give some insperation.

I was away from treasure hunting for 24 years. I have used metal detectors
as a surveyor, locating property corners and utilities. It can be a whole lot like
treasure hunting.

I started back in July of last year. Went from BH to Garrett and then found
Tesoro.

After a month with my Cibola, I learned enough on this forum to start finding
small gold jewelry. Stuff smaller than a man's gold ring with diamonds and
other stones.

Here's a photo I took after three months of that learning experience.

HH,

Nice finds Tabdog!

Congrats on the Vaquero Cjruger! It is a very nice machine and it will for sure find some good stuff. I am one of the VID watchers Tabdog is talking about. I own an Xterra-70. I do like using it but with it I knew I was missing stuff. When hunting I was ignoring my ears and watching the screen. I was not digging all the good signals?

When I hunt with my Vaquero I dig much more trash, and poptops. The funny thing is I am also digging better and older items with it. Now you can set it up for cherry picking and take a chance on missing gold. It depends on my mood, how much time I have, and my gut feel for a site. If I am on an old homesite I am running mine one notch below a nickle. Same holds true at a tot lot.

Take your Vaquero out to a busy tot lot. Dig all repetable good sounds and see how you do. If you want to cherry pick try setting it up with the disc turned up to the top of the far righ screw on the faceplate. You will miss the gold but you get some good coin signals.

Good luck to you, keep up the hard work and the finds will come, Beale.

IF YOUR DISC IS ALL THE WAY UP AND A COIN IS DEEP WONT IT MISS IT? ALSO THE THING i AM NOTICING IS EVEN WITH THE DISC WAY UP IT STILL BEEPS ON BIG NAILS AND BOLTS AND WASHERS AND SUCH. BUT THAT IS JUST AROUND MY HOUSE AND PROPERTY. MY NEIGHBORS HOUSES ARE PRETTY OLD AND THERE WAS A BIG OLD BARN NEXT TO ME THAT ISNT THERE ANY MORE, SO THATS WHY THERE IS SO MUCH CRAP AROUND MY HOUSE. i NEED TO GET OUT TO SOME PARKS.
