Hi Cjruger,
You asked:
Should the discrimination not hit on a nail at all when it is turned up past tabs?
Because mine hits on big nails and large bolts sometimes even if I turn it all the way up.
Nails and other steel items can somehow build up a stronger signal in the ground once they have
been there for a while. Some people call this a "halo effect". This effects all MD's to some degree.
Oddly enough, there are some nails that the V will not pick up at all in the discrimination mode,
even with the discrimination mode turned all the way down. The VCO all metal mode will pick-up
anything that the disc mode rejects on the low end of conductors. When you learn this machine,
you can use it such a way that it will not miss much of anything. It's a great machine. After getting
a better handle on it you should be better able to ID targets.
Then you asked:
Also I put my gold wedding ring on the ground and had to turn the disc down
under a nickel to get it to beep. I'm starting to get the feel of it thou, does this sound like common
behavior for these?
Yes that sounds like normal behavior. Smaller gold jewelry is even lower on the discriminator.
If you like finding gold, you will have to lower your discrimination and dig a lot more in the lower
range. That's a challenge. Trick is to be where there is a good chance of finding it.
If you want to find gold chains, you may miss some of them in the discrimination mode, even with
the discrimination turned all the way down. Gold chains are a challenge. If there is not a large link
or a catch on the chain, and it is small, you may have to be in the VCO all metal mode to detect it.
That's why I hunt in the all metal mode when I'm trying to find gold jewelry.
There is no TID machine that can tell the difference between gold and trash. That's why many
people stress the use of quality headphones, whether you have a TID or not. Many people say
the TID causes them to miss a lot of good targets because they are watching the screen instead
of listening to the signal.
I like gold, and I am not rich enough for a $2,000 machine. I couldn't lug the thing around anyway.
They weigh a ton.
I think the best bet for finding jewelry, for me is a machine like the Vaquero. I have three other MD's
I use also. They are all Tesoro's. Most other brands are just not as good at finding small gold jewelry.
There are other good MD's besides Tesoro. Tesoro is what I am comfortable with. It works well for me.
Take the time to learn what the Vaquero is telling you and you will increase the quality of your finds.
Best of luck with your V,
