Don't drive an hour only to find the beach locked up like I did about 3 weeks ago. If your not sure if it's gated then you might call ahead.
If you don't have hip waders walk along the water searching in the water as far as you can get. This may be a good time to invest in a long handled sand scoop. Remember to run in the relic mode and dig all signals. Even the one way broke tones too. Have your permit on you in a zip lock bag. The rangers WILL come and talk to you. Here's how it goes down. Ranger " You have to leave! " You " But Sir I have obtained a detecting permit" Ranger " Let me see it please" You " Hear it is Sir" Ranger " Are you finding anything? " You " Yes Sir I have picked up some broken glass, 3 rusty nails and about 12 pull tabs." Ranger " OK, proceed"
There are some tips in there.
1. Always leave the house with a broken piece of glass, some nails and tabs in your pouch.
2. Even though you have just found 2 gold rings and $3.00 in change and can't wait to tell somebody - DON'T DO IT! Don't tell anyone at the beach like swimmers, kids and the Ranger. If you find a ring don't set there and look at it. Just put it in a special place and go on.
3. Always be kind to the Ranger.
4. Always fill your holes on the beach.
5. While cleaning your ring to post it on the forum you must drink a beer!

hunted old school found 30-06 bullet (live) went back the next day still had bullet with me. the local yokel drove by several times and finally stopped. so I hollered over and told him I had found a live round in the yard and asked if he could dispose of it so no kids would be hurt. He politely told me to carry on and have a good day. 15 minutes later I found what I thought was aquarter but when I cleaned the back it said one cent it was an1888 canadian one cent piece.
The state park beaches closest to him are open all year round. The next closest are gated. Don't know if they are open winter or not? If you're MD'ing when they come by they ask for your permit. The permission slip for land and water are different. You only need to turn in find's of historical significance. Certain areas are out of bound's, like the camping areas. It's a good idea to keep a good looking junk ring in your pouch so if some scam artist comes with the ranger to say you found their ring and won't give it back, just tell the ranger I've never talked to this person but I have a ring if it's their's they can have it no fuss. If they're scaming, they'll snatch it faster than a snake can strike and you go on your merry way. If a stranger asks Greg in MI if he has found their rings? He responds, "Was it 18K with a 1 ct in the center with 10-1/4 ct surrounding it? If they say yes, he says"Nope, haven't found that one but if I do you will get your ring back." Another scam is that they will send a buddy to say I just want to see. If you show them the one will tell their buddy and he comes back with the ranger and perfectly describes the ring. Don't show, don't tell. You shouldn't have any problem with the rangers here. Just shouldn't though. No guarantees.
