Got my oldest coin ever and she's sitting down.:surprised:

Went out yesterday and decided to try out my 12X10 SEF coil. I started out at a small park in my town that has been pounded to death over the years, but figured this would be a good test with the coil. Got a good tone and pulled out a 1941 merc about eight inches deep. I'm thinking OK, this coil is doing it's job. About twenty feet away I got another good silver tone and pulled out a nice silver ring which was also about eight inches deep. After about another half hour or so the parents and little kids started showing up so I decided to move on. I found this spot at a Naval installation where I have found three Barber coins in the past and decided to give it another try. They tore down a bunch of older Navy houses and built some brand new ones. The spot I went to use to be a wooded area with some old big trees in it and a bunch of trails. The trees were all gone now and the stumps were in a big pile off to one side. This area was also home to many old chicken farms back in the late 1800's. I was there for about an hour and got a good signal. Dug a plug and out pops a fairly worn 1898 Barber quarter.:clapping: I'm thinking that makes Barber number four out of this place and I was a happy camper. Things slowed down and then I got this faint signal and almost passed it up, but thought that it could be another Barber possibly. Dug a plug and a good seven inches down I saw her. Looked at the back first and saw the wreath and was thinking Barber dime. Turned it over and saw the seated lady and just fell over on my back. If anyone would have seen me they probably would have thought that I was having a heart attack. She was pretty dark, but I started rubbing her with my fingers and most of the dark film came off and then I saw a good look at the date.:surprised: Yep, the date was 1853 and my oldest coin that I have ever found and what makes it really neat is that it's the same year that the state of Washington became a territory. Finding a coin that is 157 years old is a dream come true and a moment that I will never forget. I have to say that my SEF coil did it's job and even though it's a lot heavier then my Pro coil, it's a keeper for sure.:clapping: Thanks for looking and GL & HH to everyone.

Thanks Bruce. Finding seated coins around here seem to be few and far between and finding one that old is even better. I think it will be hard for me to beat that "ole lady". HH.

Eddie

Thanks TD. Barbers and mercs are nice, but those elusive seated coins are hard to come by and when you find one around my neck of the woods there aren't enough words to discribe what it's like to bring one back to the light of day again. HH.

Way to go, Eddie! Those big old trees are awesome - even better when there's silver near by, and old silver at that! Those trees and silver seem to just find each other...

Nice looking seated dime! The dark toning in the background really makes the design stand out.

Mark

Thanks Mark. I really had nothing to do with the dark toning in the background. I just rubbed it pretty good between my fingers and that's how she looked.

Congrats on your oldest coin my friend.:clapping:

It is a BEAUTY:thumbup:

The other finds are SWEET too.

Thanks Bryce. It will be hard for me to try and beat something that old as we just don't find that many old coins around here. Mine is just a youngster compared to your seated.:clapping: HH.

It's at a college that has been around for a long time. We hunted there about three years ago and found some silver and some injuns and Lee finally got ahold of the right person after several tries and we got the go ahead to do some detecting there. If you belong to OPTH I'll tell you where it's at.
