Just received my silver umax today.. Have to say, I am a little intimidated.. I read the whole manual, but still confused on how to start off using it... it seems like there should be some routine when sweeping a park or something.. I have no idea where to put the knobs to start...

Fooled around with it in my back yard.. Found a penny! So that is promising..so far, I am having trouble pinpointing.. the spot I start digging in is always a few inches off.. I am trying the "x" thing.....ALso, not sure where to put the discriminate dial........

Thanks... you cleared up all my questions.. I am practicing in my backyard right now, mainly, for the reason you said.. I can't plug a decent hole... my background is tore up, so im practicing.. when I can plug a hole well, I will move on to some parks...
thanks

My detecting friend, it's never my intention to sound flippant or demeaning to a new person to this hobby, but really dude -- what you really need is a hunting buddy/mentor.It's very good that you're practicing hunting and pinpointing and plugging in your own back yard, but having a mentor at your side will do you a world of good.
If you were anywhere near the south suburbs of Chicago or central Chigago downtown, I'd be more than happy to volunteer myself to help you out because really, the difficulties you're having are actually pretty simple to overcome. But if you give us an idea where you are, I'm sure there is *someone* experienced out there willing to help you get on the right track.

Hey Scott, thanks for all the help... The funny thing is, I found this website, can't remember what it's called, where detectionist are listed by area, etc... I typed in Dayton,Ohio, and emailed several people.. One got back with me right away, and volunteered to go hunting with me...
Also, I went out to a playground (good practice area), and really practiced for a few hours.. I now feel quite comfortable with the detector... I can now even distinguish between trash beeps and good finds beeps.. It's amazing what a little practice will do... Now the only problem I have is, where to detect around here.. I can't find any abandoned old house or stores (like general stores) around here... It seems like jsut parks and playgrounds... But hopefully, my hunting buddy can help me out with that....
Once again, thanks for all the help.. I don't where I would be at without your help or the rest of the board.. I will keep you updated...
