Got my new digging tool

Road Gang

New member
I just received my Lesche digging tool today and it is quite impressive. Very sturdy! It's pricey at $40 but I don't think it will ever break or bend. I read about this item in the forums and they weren't kidding when they said it was well made. I'm putting this in the Bounty Hunter forum since I'm new and this is part of the complete outfit I'm putting together for my new Legacy 3300. Things are looking up for a little digging now. :)

Well, I am glad that you got your gear and your happy with it...being comfortable with your gear is 50 percent of the battle...I LOVE my LESCHE....Just be careful...it is too easy to get carried away when digging a hole and nick or even pierce your target...take it slow and steady...I was gonna go out hunting tonight, but just as I was going out the door, it started to rain frozen rain...I was soooooo peeeved!!!!...It had been raining all day, and then it stopped, but as soon as I wanna go out and hunt, this starts...oy.....My LESCHE and my pinpointer are invaluable to me.
Keep it dry though, as it WILL rust if left wet in the sheath. I wash it off and completely dry it after each hunt. I have washed the sheath out when I got a LOT of mud in it, but I would not advise this...it took forever to completely dry out.

BH-L, in another post you said you are in Syracuse, NY? I'm surprised you can dig at all in February. Here in central Maine, we just got another 10" of snow on top of the 10" left over from previous storms. Its going to be August before it all melts! We got freezing rain here yesterday too - just before the second batch of snow in 2 days. I think the only way I'm going to get some detecting in is to pack up my motor home and head south (which I just may do in a week or two). Good advise on the Lesche. I wondered about rust and whether you could wash that sheath. The sheath has a stiff backing in it that I hoped wasn't made of some type of cardboard. You hit both my questions without my even asking. The force is strong in you!

I wonder if anyone can clarify something for me on the Legacy 3300? The ground balance does exactly what? On this new model 3300, the GB is used in the pinpoint mode only. It is automatic in the motion mode. This is one of the changes they made recently from what I hear. My question is: When you go to pinpoint mode, you can hit pinpoint again near your target to reduce the area of detection - thus narrow down the location. I'm guessing that the pinpoint function reduces the strength of the field where the ground balance works more like discriminate? Is this correct? It would be nice to understand how this works so I can know what or how deep I am searching.

I've practiced shooting coins through a piece of cardboard and the pinpoint feature lets me detect within about 1" of the target which is great. My wife is happy with that since she is going to do a lot of the digging (haha)! I told her the Lesche was her Valentine's gift. I'm glad she has a sense of humor. But there is a half truth there... I'm disabled and have trouble getting up and down like that and she will be my digger buddy much of the time. I figure this hobby will motivate me to help keep me moving.

The Ground Balance or Ground-Trac (on BH models) takes a running tally of the natural mineralization of the soil...it averages it's readings over a period of time (I am talking milliseconds), and sets the machine to ignore the minerals in the soil and only sound off on REAL targets...I know this is not very technical in my terminology, but it is the best way I can describe it...From all my asking, the Ground balance is truly automagic, but I still have my doubts...I think it is preset, but I am not sure on this issue...I would need to see the schematics, and BH is not giving that up (Nor would I in their shoes)...

hey roadgang, its good that youre talking to bh landstar. the man is very intelligent about bh machines and so is nugget, they are both experts in their fields. no kidding. ive learned much from them too, and respect what they have to say. i dont know much about your particular machine. but you can believe if they can get out and do some hunting, theyre gonna do it! florida sure is looking good about now...hh,

Hi roadgang, even the true full auto track detectors are lazy buggers some times. I would suggest pumping the coil up and down to ground balance the unit every 10 to 20 paces, this will keep it running smoothly, I do this with the T4's. HH regards Nugget.:detecting:

From what I am hearing it sounds like the ground balance is a type of discrimination as I suspected. So it won't have any effect on the depth of the search then. I just wanted to clarify what it is doing to better understand what my results mean. Thank you all for the information.

It's still snowing here. Unbelievable! Maybe I'll pay someone to plow my lawn so I'll have a place to try my new detector...:)

Yes, the weather truly rots lately...It went from 55 degrees the other day (record temp for the month), back to 25 degrees last night...this is in a span of like 3 days...They say if you do not like the weather in SorryExcuse (Syracuse), NY, just wait 5 minutes and tell us what you think then....I will hunt in almost any conditions...I went out last night, and it was 25 degrees out...I had my doubts if the detector would even cooperate with me, but she performed nearly flawlessly...The Pumping the coil from about 6 inches to ground level like nugget and I suggest does seem to work for the ground balancing...I do it when the machine starts to give false signals at the ends of my sweeps (not due to raising the coil (pendulum swing)). As long as I can get to the dirt, and dig it, I will hunt...I had to keep my diggings above 4 inches deep last night as the ground was rock hard...the bark in the tot lot was harder than the ground as it sucks up more water and freezes faster and harder. The coins almost flew out of the hole when I got under them...It was kinda funny...I dug one screw cap at 6 inches that I was hoping to be a ring...took me almost 10 minutes...OY!!!...I am convinced that it takes a blow torch to destroy a LESCHE...I was prying pretty hard with it, and all that got hurt was my hands...:clapping:
