Qicpic. Indeed the Vaquero is a fine machine. I've had mine about a year now, and I'm very impressed with it. Good depth and super light to boot.
I've used it on the beach a few times. Dry sand it was great, very sensitive to coins and to small gold (that day found a small open-faced gold crown with it that weighed about 0.8 grams).
That convinced me that it was sensitive enough to gold.
Wet beach (at least for salt water), the machine only worked fair - a lot of chattering from the salt, and some loss in depth. I ran the sens down a bit (at 6) and seemed to calm down then. It wasn't that great on the wet sand unfortunately - but that is to be expected from a single frequency Vlf machine - most aren't that good around salt water.
Dry land - you won't have any issues unless your ground is heavily mineralized. I'm from Florida, all we have is sand mostly, no mineralization to deal with.
I personally recommend the 5.5" coil as a great accessory - especially for park hunting, or anywhere that is trashy. It separates targets very well, is super light, and still gets good depth.
I can still get 6-7" on coins even with the little coil, which is pretty good. The stock coil will get better depth that the little guy, of course, but I just love the little guy and use it almost exclusively now.
I think you'll soon see that you made a good choice with the Vaquero. Good luck and happy hunting.
