Got My 5 X 10 DD Coil -- Problems?

rifleman

New member
My coil came today and the fit between the top and bottom of the coil housing is not all that good. It goes from a good fit to better than 1/8" and then back again. The coil seems to work fine. Anybody else's coil like that.? I figure I'll just put some silicone in the crack to seal it and call it a day. I really don't want to send it back, I need it this weekend. Anybody have any thoughts on the matter?

Thanks, John K

Do you mean the Skid Plate doesn't fit perfectly? That's pretty normal. If the case of the coil itself is open or has a gap, this is abnormal. Don't use it if there's an opening directly into the coil housing. Return it. I think that what you have described is the coil cover (scuff cover) being ill-fitting.

They all seem to fit a little poorly on this coil - or at least they look looser than they are.
This is the case on every 5x10" elliptical I have seen.

I wouldn't seal it with silicone since it's designed to be removed when damaged. Replacement is only around $10-$12

But you don't want moisture and magnetic or iron particles getting in there ...and they will. The iron particles become magnetized in a short time
from the coil field and then give constant false signals to the coil.

Use Black Duct Tape to seal the coil in place. It looks very neat and will prevent the coil cover (which will eventually crack if you hit
a rock hard enough) from falling off. Nothing will annoy you more than a split coil cover constantly falling off in the field.

Here's what I did with my own to keep it in place - Note the tape is wound twice around the rim:

I never even realized it was a cover. I used silicone, but I'm sure I can still remove it when necessary. I will put tape around it also to keep the magnetic sand from sticking to the silicone. I knew the standard coil had the cover, but didn't realize the DD coil had it also. Thanks for your reply. I'm going to Quartzsite, AZ on Tuesday to see if I can scare up a nugget or two. Wish me luck.

All the best with your trip! The only coil that I know of for the X-Terra 70 which DOESN'T come with a replaceable scuff cover is the 6" coil.
That was surprising to learn but again, the same black duct tape can be used to coat the underside and rim should you obtain this coil.
See here for Pic of 6" DD HF coil with protective tape

Remember that your 5x10" DD HF coil is not waterproof: The 'joint' where the cable enters the housing is not sealed for water immersion.

Thanks for the reply. How do you like the 6" DD. I'll bet it's great in trashy areas. I'm pretty sure it's going to be my next purchase.

Good hunting, John K

The 6" is like a knife blade in Trashy Areas. Really useful for underwater applications in say streams or rivers.
Mine picked up a 0.02g nugget (micro-nugget really) on the surface during air-tests. Very useful for Specimen hunting too.

I used it the other day in place of the Elliptical.
