Got my 1st Shield nickel! :jump:

I finally went back and re-hunted a site. :) I almost never do that. I usually just get permission on another site. This site is the best I've ever been on. Last spring, it produced 28 IHs, 14 silver (8 of which were Barbers) and gobs of wheats. Well, I only got an hour and a half on it last night with my 5" coil but I pulled 3 wheats, 3 IHs (1881,82,92), a 1897 V-nickel, and my first 1870 Shield nickel :D. The shield is in rough shape but I was able to get the date after it soaked overnight in lemon juice. The shield acted differently than the V nickels. It gave me a nickel signal in enhanced but it popped a foil tone once in a while. As soon as I pulled the plug, the nickel went to a foil signal while still in the hole. Once I knew what I had, I scanned it on the surface and it stayed foil. All of this was in enhanced mode. This is one of the few times I can remember a coin changing it's reading out of the ground. As Dankowski says, The 3D needs the dirt matrix (seems like a fancy word to describe dirt) to work correctly.

My 5" coil pulled 8 coins in only an hour and a half from an area I covered last spring. I am sure that the small coil made the difference as most of the coins I found were near large pieces of junk. Also the ground is very dry now and was very wet last spring. I'm sure my 8" couldn't distinguish the coin from the large target nearby. I'm also sure that I'm a better detectorist now than I was last year as I'd only been hunting a few months when I hit this place. I will have to go back and cover some more of it for sure. Note: All of the coins I pulled were at 3" or less. :yikes:

What a place. In our area, you jump up and down finding one Indian Head or something from the 1800's.

Just shows what you find under different soil conditions. My brother & I have hit an old girl scout camp over and over. It is probably a 3 to 4 acre area. Have hit it under damp, drenched and bone dry conditions and have always gotten more coins. Hit it last week, 1 coin, 42 quarter. Went back a few days later, ground like concrete, 6 more coins, 4 wheats.

I am sure this old shield nickel leached into the ground and due to its poor shape would explain its variance in readings...Another case where the 5 inch hockey puck coil does its job...

Congrats on your first shield nickel!!! I'll say I am surprised you re-hunted a site... :) Even the best can miss coins.
