Got it broke in.

After reading the book several times, watching the video three times, and experimenting with it here in the house some, I finally got out to get some "on the job training" the other day in the yard I grew up in.

2 1/2" flat washers 5-6" deep
1 5/8 sq. nut 4" deep
a piece of no. 9 wire 8" deep
an old rivet
1 1/4 x 2" bolt
1 22cal. rifle shell, spent
1 22mag. rifle shell, spent
1 3/4" bearing ( I thought I hit paydirt when this rang up on the screen :veryangry::lmfao:)I was thinking " MORGAN".

And some other scrap Iron too numerous to mention.:surrender:

BUT.....................I also found.........,

1- 1954 wheatie
2- 1969 pennies
1- 1965 dime
1- 1961 nickel
1- 1965 quarter

It's a start.,I'm happy. Now I need to spent more time getting to know the machine better.

I found this Forum 2-3 weeks ago, and have been reading a lot. THANK YOU all for the info!!!!!! VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!
I don't enjoy typing too much,as I "search and peck". But I will chime in from time to time.
I also love to fish and hunt, so this is just what I needed, another hobby!

I wish I could retire and play.
I do love my profession, but building log homes for 22 yrs. seems to be unkind to my 53 yr.old body.
I better shut up, my father is 82, and still taking care of his 80 acres and cattle.

Ok,,,,I'll stop. Mike.

Great start! I would have probably dug those junk targets too. The nice silver will come! Tell us about your machine and how you had it set up?

You should be happy, Mike. You have gotten the normal start, with good equipment. My first detector was an old BFO model - needless to say I didnt fare as well as you!

Anyone here will tell you there are good days and bad, good finds and trash. Usually, the latter outweighs the former.
But, your happiness is independent of that which you find... you either got it or you don't, you either make it or you won't.

Someone once asked Laurence Olivier, on his 96th birthday, how it felt to be 96.
After careful consideration he replied, 'It beats the alternative."

Stay happy regardless of your finds.

Graet finds!!!:detecting:

Nice finds, you didn't get rich but you did find some $. The good goods will show up soon.

Thanks for the flowers, folks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Khouse, the MD is a Garrett 2500gti and I had it set on discriminate coins mode w/ the search image on, using the stock 9.5 coil. I bought a 4.5 scorcher(extra) with it and it also came w/the 11.5 coil.(pro pac). What little MD'n I've done so far, convinced me to order a pinpointer, which should come tomorrow USPS.(Tinytec Ultraluxe). The machine pinpoints great, but some of the items are so deep that I have to try and pinpoint more and the coil won't fit down into the hole. My Bobcat skid steer loader wouldn't look too great on someone else's property digging a hole .LOL. The 2500 seems to get down there and find things. Of course this is my first ever MD, just going on what I've read,I guess. What do I know. So far I think I'm gonna like it!!!!!.

Mike.

FWIW. First. That isn't a bad start at all. The ages of those coins leads me to believe you will find some silver there too. Second. I would turn off iron. It is a lot of digging and there probably isn't too much good iron treasure in the yard. You can always go back later and look when you get a little more experience. Third. I got a jump start when I was really green (I'm no longer really green but have moved up to green) by going to a spot where I figured there was a boatload of good targets and relatively few junk targets. By good I mean coins and jewelry, and in my case the site was an elementary school. I got really good at pinpointing and recovering targets. Rarely frustrated. I was finding about 30 coins an hour until I cleaned a lot of it out. Took over $100.00 out of that site and I still love to go back. Then I moved to some sites with more trash and I was much better.

Just my 2 cents. Both zincers.

Chris, thanks!!! I really do appreciate the advise-suggestions.

I was 9 mo. old when my parents bought the farm in 1955. The house -barns were supposed to have been built around 1880. It's never been MD'ed. So I'd imagine there is some silver there. I lived there all my life(until I moved out at 18.) and just live a mile & a half down the road now with my wife of 35 yrs.

Who does a person see, generally, to ask about MDing a school?

Mike.

If you read back on this forum there are a few stories about people getting tossed off school property. I wrote one. It feels pretty bad. It was worse in my case because I had asked the maintenance guys for permission. The principal tossed me and he wasn't nice. I hunt about 15 other schools including all others in the same district and have never had another issue. I always talk to the maintenance guys if I see them. Obviously, I never go when class is in session. I always pick up litter. Never smoke or drink alcohol on school property (at least in my district.) My favorite school hunts are summer nights and Saturday and Sunday mornings. There is one school district near me where the school grounds are closed to the public on Sundays. I don't know why. Where I live the school board is in charge of school property.

I also make it a point to keep my eyes open and report anything suspicious. A number of our local cops know me as that MD guy and never really bug me except to stop and jaw. Cops are also good sources of information for lost goodies or where there have been events, parties etc......

As for schools or parks, start in the bark chips or whatever surrounds the jungle gym. Sand. Ground up tires. Stones. It's easy diggings and there is usually some really good loot. Ask any kids you see where the hang outs are.

It feels strange at first detecting in public, especially when you're new and you're not quite sure how big of a hole you might make to find that 2005 cent!. It did for me anyway. You'll find that people are going to be interested. Be a good ambassador. Kids are going to want to try out your rig. I have places I go when I want to hunt alone too.

My three cents. Two zincers and a wheatie.

Chris

Good job Sawdust!
The only advise I would have to give is to take one each of those coins you found and re-bury them a couple feet apart in a straight line four or five inches down and mark the exact location with a golf tee.
You would be surprised how much knowledge you can gain with your machine by experimenting with different settings and memorizing the tones each target makes. Kind of gives you an excuse to head out to the back yard when the novelty of a 35 year marriage gets to wearing a bit thin.
