I happened to be in Los Angeles area late last week, and am planning on going nugget hunting over the Christmas break in Flagstaff and Yuma areas.

So I needed a pickaxe for prying into and around rocks, and found (Edit - Non Sponsor), and paid him a visit.

Besides having lots of really good tools and detectors, he took the time (about an hour) to give me hints on where in the Arizona area I might start looking for gold nuggets, and gave me some hints on how to get started.

Being new to the hobby, his time was invaluable to me, and will keep me from just blindly lighting up my detector.

Anybody else have any good hints and info to get me started in those areas? What to look for, where to start scanning, etc?

Hmmmm.....I used to live in both places. Flagstaff will probably have snow. Have to get off the mountain to escape it. Yuma should be nice though. I'll look thorough my files. See if I can find something. What dates are you going to be there?

Just north of Yuma are the KOFA mountains (king of Arizona) mining district. Some of the most scenic desert I have ever seen. Look for thumb butte to get you in the right area. This was a big silver mining district long ago and there are mines and tailing piles everywhere. Probably better areas for gold but it has potential for old coins and mining relics as well as big chunks of silver ore which are mostly lead but make good mineral specimens. Also lots of very nice fluorite crystals. Lake Martinez is also in the general area that has thousands of drunk teenagers in the water and shore. This has got to be a good place to find jewelry. And if you get the chance I highly recommend the Yuma territorial prison museum (in Yuma). It will give you a much better idea of the reality of the wild west. Believe it or not Yuma is a great place for a vacation!
Cheers,
Jim

My dad wants to take me to Martinez Lake in his boat, so I will be bringing my waterproof detector and scanning the sandbars.

Yuma will be Christmas Eve and a couple days after. Flagstaff the 3 days before. I am not sure exactly of the dates, as we are driving and just "playing by ear".

I would be happy to find any of that kind of stuff.
