Got another whatzit to try and figure out.....

Found these in the area of an 1800s fort site. I can guess the item on the left is a bell of some sort, maybe it has a specific name or use someone may know of, BUT the two small things which look like plumb bobs has me kinda stumped. Could they be weights from a scale perhaps??? They were about 6 inches down.

Any ideas would be appreciated,

Thanks
Tony

I think they're too pointed and round for fish weights. I'm thinking they're from a small clock that needed to be wound from the chains and what would be on the bottom of the chain to hold on to and as the weights. They're cute. Do they have any designs/pattern on them? Yes, it's a crotal bell that would have been used on a horse sleigh and they're not cheap! COOL finds! HH, Nancy

Edjcox, Nancy,

Thanks for the attempted guesses. I tend to not think they are fishing weights because they do not seem to be lead and are somewhat on the decorative side.

I suppose I will attempt to clean one up some more and take a better pic of it. Perhaps I will weigh them too to see if they are an approximate common weight value should they maybe have been used along with a scale of some sort to weigh gold, or letters or maybe drugs, being this small, it would have to be some precision measurements in my opinion. These were found in an area that dates back to the 1850s and makes me wonder or doubt they needed precision back then.

Its interesting when something out of the ordinary and yet so simple is found that requires some good research and guesses to best determine what they may in fact be.

The bell is tiny too, I was thinking maybe a cat bell?

Thanks again for the ideas, all are good suggestions, I appreciate it

Tony

Tony,

I'm very interested in the weighted objects. They're too precise to be an "outdoors man" item. No way. No matter the date, even back 200 years plus, weight was a significant measure. As for the small bell, the bells on a sleigh were very large to small. I would think the bell is one of the smallest of them all. Here's a picture that I found on the net.[attachment 143789 Sleighbells.JPG] Hope this helps. HH, Nancy

the bell looks like an old "turkey bell" . made the rascal a little easier to find . especially on thanksgiving morning , lol .
