Got an Edge

Hi,

Well, as some of you probably know I was not enthralled with all aspects of the Fisher ID Edge. My biggest complaint was that it had no small coil, and from what I'd seen from Fisher for some time I doubted we'd ever see one. If I recall correctly I said I would get an ID Edge if Fisher ever did come out with a small coil, but I never thought it would happen. Even when one was announced for "Spring" I had my doubts, figuring I'd believe it when I saw it. Until that ever happened, there was no way I'd consider switching from my CZ with its 5" hockey puck.

Well, Fisher finally came though, and so I figured I'd better keep good to my word. Just filled out my warranty card on my new ID Edge. The only problem is my small coil is still not here, but I hope it will be next week. I will be out using my new Edge tomorrow regardless.

All my detectors tend to have a single use, and what my Edge will mostly see service for will be freshwater wading. I need a unit I can chestmount, and those seem to be getting rare these days. I could use an underwater VLF unit I suppose, but when I use my underwater machines I just get on my suit and mask and snorkel and jump in. For times when I don't feel like doing that I prefer waders and a chestmount unit. And it is nice to have features like the target ID you do not get with an underwater unit. The Edge box is smaller than my CZ box and so works better for this use. And since I primarily am after jewelry, I'm happier with the Edge having nickel range items grouped into the same audio tone as other low end items instead of up as a hi tone coin, as with the CZ. I do not mind skipping modern coins and so the Jewelry Mode may end up being very much to my liking.

Anyway, good on you, Fisher, for coming out with that small coil. Credit where credit is due. Some have made excuses as to why it is ok for a manufacturer to skip small coils (they don't sell well?), but it does make a difference to people like me. Enough that one coming out made the sale in my case. Now it can be the X-Terra that takes the brunt of the complaints on the lack of a small coil!

A man of his word. Congrats Steve on a fine pick. I know that being a dealer you have your pick of detectors for your specialized (jealous? who me??) hunting needs. The only gold I find is the refined, less pure stuff but I'll take it and smile all the same. I can just picture myself out in the lakes around here with a GP 3500. Sorta like huntin squirrels with an elephant gun.

Good luck on your hunt and let us know how the small coil does for you.

Tom

Hi Tom,

I'm afraid that despite best intentions I have done little detecting this summer except for that done looking for gold nuggets. Hope to get a little burst of water hunting in before the snow falls, though.

Can't complain, however. Here is a picture of my last gold in quartz specimen found a few weeks ago, with a Minelab SD2200Dv2, up at my mine at Moore Creek. Also my largest this summer at a hair under 3 ounces. Probably about 2 ounces of actual gold with the rest being quartz and silver. Anyway, made for that nice happy feeling when it popped out of the ground.

Hopefully I'll be posting some Edge gold soon. Continued good luck to you Tom!

hi Steve i also have an edge that i chest mount to detect in the water if you don't already have one you might try out the new style binocular straps that have small split rings you can hook to the edge and leave on then you can chest mount it at will and it sits high and dry

Very unusual looking, are the darker areas silver?

Tom

Hi Tom,

The gold is in what is called a "quartz monzonite" and so actually most of the rock you see is feldspar and a little quartz. The feldspars run from creamy white to various shades of brown. The black looking stuff is tourmaline. The silver is part of the gold alloy, which is roughly 80% gold and 20% silver.

we don't get to see many nuggets here.
Be sure to stop back again & let us know how your makin' out with the small coil.....

Have you gotten any definitive word from Full Metals geologists?
Tom

Hi,

Bummer, called Fisher in California, they said order should have shipped from Texas. Was supposed to get call back... nothing. Oh well, looks like I'm lost in transition. Hopefully I'll see the small coil as I've held off on my wading expedition until I get it. Snow on the mountains today, lake will be freezing soon. Maybe next week.

had to remove a connection in coil connector between pin and connector metal (or don't screw connector ring to control box). Sent the first one back but just fixed the second one myself. Verified my connection with operating 8" coil.
