Got a Pistol Probe....hmmm

Saw the videos. Read the forums. Heard all the rave amongst friends how great it was. Seemed like everybody wanted one. Or was recommending I get one. So...I did. Today I finally got a chance to take it out and give it a go. Well. Seems everyone forgot to mention that it makes the Minelabs go crazy! That was somewhat easy to fix by moving the coil FAR away. Tuning the Freq on the probe ext. However. It makes it a pain in the arse.
Next thing I wanted to point out. And again may I remind you, I have only used it for one outing so far. So I may not really be adjusted to it yet. Is that its HUGE. It's LONG and makes for probing a smaller hole really awkward. Plus, the thing is so powerful. Even with the Thres WAY down. You can't really tell if the target is right under the tip, next to it...or 2-3 inches up the shaft! I found this to be a pain. Especially when there was some other metal in the hole. You go on a wild goose chase. So, that brings me back to having to move your EX2 far away. You gotta pick it back up. Check your hole again for the tone ext. Not real great on your back. And not as fast at retrieving the target as I would have thought by all the hype. Or, it could simply be. I just suck with the pistol probe.
Either way I gotta sadly admit. I am not really impressed that much. Especially after shelling out 169 for it. But I will hold some faith that in a week. I will have it all figured. And be loving it.
Anybody got some opinions on it? Or maybe some tips they could share using it with Minelab machines???

Hi, interesting post thanks for sharing. I have never used the pistol probe and dont think I will. I have had a few others and now use the whites bullseye II and think its no better than a less expensive bounty hunter. The depth is no better thats for sure, and its a little big for what it does. I also tried the vibra probe and think I should have stuck with that one since it was waterproof and would increase the pulses the closer I got to the target. The sunray was nice but made the machine even heavyer than it was already lol. Well good luck and HH L8R

Sorry to hear about your Pistol Probe. I have the Garrett Pro Pointer and it works great. No problem with interference with my detector at all. This thing is completely waterproof, has great depth and a simple one button turn on and go pin-pointer. Sell it to one of your buddies and get the Garrett.:clapping:

Thank you very much for this post and info,
I actually was about to buy one of the pistol probes until I found out that it interfered with the E Trac...Please tell more about the Garrett pro pointer how deep does it go? does it send straight down or read along the side of the shaft as well? how much did you Pay? I have a whites bulls eye but if your not within 1 inch it will not find it.
Thanks a bunch,

If you want info on the Garrett Pro Pointer--go to the Garrett Users Forum & there is plenty of info there about that probe (starting with a field test/evaluation). -----Incidentally, it's the best HAND HELD pinpointer on the market at this time (IMHO).-------Del

... and agree with your observations. I am a long time user of the pocket Uni-Probe, and I love it. So I thought the PistolProbe would be even better - NOT!

I hunt in city parks, and cannot have something that looks like a gun barrel hanging off my belt.

I wrote the mfr of the PistolProbe about these and other issues when it first came out. I was very disappointed, especially because of the multiple target issue.

I have yet to see any word on revisions that might change my mind. Which is too bad.

Im not impressed with it looking like a gun either. Its holster doest help in the slightest bit. The design is absolutely horrible. But I still got it because people keep saying how great it is.I added some colored electric tape to the tip so it at least looks like a toy gun. The multiple target issue is very irritating. I am going to give a few more goes next time Im out and just see if there is some kinda of learning curve to it. It was pretty spendy for what it is. Honestly, I'd rather sell it. return it ext and just get something else. I was really disappointed with it my first day out. God I hope I change my mind.....

Like I said.................. sell it and go with the Garrett or get the X-1 probe from Sun-Ray. I have the X-1 on my XS, but still use my Garrett probe as a backup from time to time.

Wait wait!!!

Seriously though, who needs 5" from a coin pinpointer that doesn't discriminate? You could be detecting nails 5" outside of your hole and chase targets all day before you find the one you're looking for. Get the X-1!

Yeah! Thats another thing I forgot to mention. The volume on high is really quiet. Also, it has a "no" volume function with an LED light which is worthless. They could have easily installed a vibration unit that would draw the same power. So the LED to me is worthless. Even if you do get the chance to see it light up from is crappy location on the unit. If they would have added a vibration unit. That would have been a smarter move. I should also point out one more design flaw. The "mud trap control flap". Yeah. The controls are located under a little lid. Right where your hand goes. And under that lid its a big empty space just waiting for mud and water to get in it. I didn't personally have this problem. Because I was hyper aware of it. But trust me. If your hands get dirty and muddy. Then that little control box is going to consume its fare share of it. And make cleaning after a hunt a major pain. And quite possibly fry out your unit.
I took it for a spin again today. And had all the same problems pinpointing. Its the dirty harry of "where the hell is my target"??
The unit. If I had to rate it. Would be a generous 3 stars out of ten. Only because it would make a good metal detector for your dog if he was suspect in swallowing your house keys or your wedding band. If you catch my drift.
Simpler is better. This is just to much overkill for a probe.
I am getting rid of it.
For its bulkiness. And added weight to my side bag. I might as well just add the Sunray for my EX2. Deal with the added weight there. At least it won't be jamming into my crotch with its barrel as I walk. Constantly adjusting its drift around my waist is incredibly irritating. Not to mention reaching over the butt end of the thing to grab my digger. ugh...
As for its overall detection....Who knows, maybe some of these units are faulty? And there are some good ones out there that work as they were designed to. And for all its design flaws. Its a good detector. But for me its definitely in my opinion not worth a 169$. Especially with all the forums and stuff for sale.

I am really let down by this unit. And bummed I sold my Garrett Ace 250 for it. I would much rather have that back as a back up unit for a friend instead as intended.

Love my Explorer II though! That is an excellent machine!!!!

I thought about the pistol probe and was quickly talked out of it by my local dealer. (Thanks Dealer)! Instead he sold me on the Garrett Pinpointer. I love it! Don't know how I lived 30 years of metal detecting without it! If I want more depth, I use the "nickel" trick! ;)

I used the Pistol Probe with my Explorer ll and had all the problems you are talking about, but it is a good probe.First there is no other probe that can match its depth including the UniProbe.Bill Ladd had a video that he explained very well on pinpointing with this probe which it can be done. The Uniprobe will still have a problem with cross talk from the detector being used even though you can't hear the detector the unit is still on and will interfere with the probe.Another plus this probe will give multiply hits in one hole, nothing like recovering three Indians or three Mercuries from one hole. Its bulky made in China has quirks but in the right area nothing is even close.Wish I would have kept mine, which is on my short equipment list needed. HH Ron

I have a pistol probe and yes it does get cross talk from the detector I found that if you hit noise cancel on the detector and at the same time hold down button on the probe it helps to lessen some of the chatter its not perfect but does help somewhat. HH
