Got a new CTX, what next?

Ray Hogan

Member
Ok, I have the new CTX and have been reading the manual and reading all the posts I can find...usually late at night. Now I'm prepared to unbox the detector, ha. What's my first step? Once I have it put together do I need to connect to my computer and immediately update the software? And how is that done?

Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

Guess I wasn't supposed to post on the Classroom forum...after I did, I notice the message "Don't post on this forum while we're working on it". Sorry, but how is a person supposed to know that the Classroom forum is being "worked on"? Also, I downloaded and read the Exchange2 users manual and now have the answers to my questions. Just have to get the nerve to jump from the detector I've been using for years to the CTX. Being a working man, I don't have a lot of time to detect, and the sites I hunt (newly scraped ground at new construction sites) are only available for a day or two mostly. Makes it tough to abandon the tried-and-true detector to learn a new one. Great forum and thanks all for the great posts.

Ray, just put it in the coin mode and go dig with it! The software update takes only a minute.Remember that you can can jump between the coin discrimination pattern and an open (no Discrimination) pattern by pushing the detect button. Be sure and turn on target trace and target trace pinpoint the first time you use it. Turn on your GPS and wireless if you plan to use those features.

Good luck,

it's a great machine!

Thanks Wayne, was just in your neck of the "Woodlands" recently during the Texas Ironman competition back in May...and no I wasn't a participant, ha, my oldest son was.

Thanks again...take care, Ray.

qkslvr is correct. Go hunting and don't forget to noise cancel. See how the machine responds in your ground then make adjustments if needed. Good luck and HH :minelab:

Thats all, just go hunt. I'm in the same boat as you without alot of time to use it but the sooner you get out and learn the machine the sooner you will be more proficient with it. I learn something new every time I use it. It is still a very powerful detector sraight out of the box. HH Joe

I will suggest, if you haven't done so already, charge the main and WM10 (if you have one) to get a full charge in them. They take about the same amount of time to charge 2-3 hours. They maintain a charge very well too. After you fire up the CTX, use the menu/select button to bring up the top menu. Then scroll to the right to OPTIONS. Once there you can select the Wireless Function if needed, the GPS, Locality, and backlight. In Locality you set the Time, Time Zone (I live in Missouri so it is "UTC - 05:00", Time Format- 12 hr or 24 hr, Units=Yards or Meters. I think this is where you pick the Language initially, I but don't remember for sure. These can, also, be set in the "Universal settings" when in the XChange2 application. You said you've been doing a lot of reading, so things will be a lot more clear once you fire that CTX up and start using it.........HH

Before getting my 3030 I had never even held a Minelab detector. I would suggest that you first gather up a bunch of coins and trash items and wave them over the coil and write down the numbers displayed on the screen. I then wrote them down on removable file folder tabs and placed the tabs on the detector as a cheat sheet. It helped me learn the coin Fe/Co values. Once I did this it all made sense to me. This detector has a steep learning curve, for me at least, but I dig more good targets and less trash with this detector than any of the others I own. This forum has been a great learning tool for me.

Hello Ray,

Well done...congratulations on your purchase of a new CTX
As a 'famous' treasure hunter once said, " Now get out there and find something!"

Can I offer a quick word about the detect screens...

Pattern 2 is not an All Metal screen.
There is active rejection on the very bottom of the screen: FE 35 CO 01 to FE 35 CO 50 all being rejected.
(created with the smallest of the edit frame size, the 1 x 1)

An All Metal screen can be made very easily and is done through the Edit function
This can be saved and then the Detect button can take you from an active Disc Pattern screen to your All Metal screen.

Good Hunting

What next? Go back and hunt all those favorite places you've given up on because they were "hunted out." With the CTX3030 it's a whole new ball game. Also, dig everything for a bit until you get a feel for it.
